I am looking to buy a new live center for the lathe. Any suggestions? Need it for pens and light duty items. This was suggested: Any others?

For my Jet mini I got the combo live center from Woodcraft for $49. I think it has about 6 different types of centers for it that go into the center body. It is small but I also use it on my DVR. It will handle a number of jobs instead just one.

There are a bunch of different ones out there so you should have lots to choose from.

Good luck.

I'll second Dick's suggestion. That's the same set I got a couple years ago and the interchangeable ends are real handy! :)

I only turn pens and other things that are done on a mandrel and the 1189 works just fine for that. Whether the WC center is worth an extra $37 would probably depend upon what types of projects your usually turn.

To get started, that one will likely do just fine. But if you ever want to expand your turning capabilities; a live center that does more stuff and holds various attchments (I like using cones) then you'll need a better one.

I have the same one as Dick. One thing that is important for pens is a 60% taper on the live center. The kit has one.
