I'm fairly new to the woodturning hobby ... I've done a few bowls and some goblets, but I haven't had the fun of doing any pens yet. I've been following the posts to learn what I can and all of you seem to enjoy doing them as a way to relax. I have a class scheduled at the Woodcraft store at Willow Lawn in March. After that, I'm sure I'll stock up on materials to do many more. Any advice to a newbie at pen turning? Thanks, Ken.

The class will help I am sure. Look into a book or 2 on pen making. Check the catalogs like Woodcraft, Rocklers, Amazon.com, etc for those. John Showler has a nice tutorial on pen making on his web site (URL at the end of this message). If I can help in anyway feel free to e-mail with any questions you have.

Ron;
I am also new to turning pens and have made about 6 so far in the last couple of weeks. It is very enjoyable and not difficult. I too am taking a class in March at a Lee Valley but thought I would try first so I had some working knowledge. Just picked up some kits from Lee Valley, read a couple of articles and started turning. I have only turned Mont Blanc pens so far but will branch out. I have found the "hardest" thing is to get the hole drilled in the center of the block. The rest is straight forward. Instructions come with the kits and are easy to follow. Have fun. Bill
