This is probably old news to everyone here, but I was surprised to find out that JIS (Japanese) grit sizes are different from those in the CAMI (American) system - at least according to the table here:

According to this, a Japanese 4000 grit waterstone is equivalent to American 1500 grit, if I read it correctly. Anyone know if this is true? I don't use waterstones anymore, I just thought it was interesting.
