Well, after 2 months of working on a china hutch for LOML, I finally got it finished! Well almost... I've still got to put the glass in and install the lighting, but that'll be a piece of cake compared to the rest of it!

very nice but you left out the details....(Material, finish etc)

Sorry Don,
The entire hutch is made of red oak. I wanted to use QS White Oak, but because of money reasons, went with red oak. All the drawers are dovetailed (I'll post pictures later of the details) with red oak fronts and aspen sides and back. I finished the hutch by dry brushing with Minwax Red Mahogany and top coated it with one coat of oil-based polyurethane and two coats of water-based polyurethane.

why one coat of oil poly and two coats of water based poly?

nice hutch.

I really like the design! Did you design it yourself?

Mike - the reason I use one coat of oil-base followed by two coats of water-base is basically for speed purposes. This way I don't have to raise the grain before I finish. I just sand it to 220, put a coat of oil-based stain on, put the oil-based poly on, and then the water-base. It is also much quicker to wait 2 hours for the water-based to dry than it is to wait 24 hours for the oil-based to dry.

Chris - yes, I designed it myself. I basically took the elements of a couple of mission style china hutches that I liked and combined them into this hutch. This is actually the first time I've designed anything this big. Took quite a while to get it just the way I wanted, especially because I'm a rookie at this woodworking thing. I did have quite a bit of help from my dad on the woodworking and finishing aspect of it just because I wasn't completely comfortable doing it by myself. Good time for a little father/son bonding!
