My Grandmother's new husband is moving to Texas with here from California. My mom and Dad went out there to help them pack up and found an old oak burl sitting in his shop that he planned to make some book ends with some day. While packing, he told them to throw it away so my dad brough it back for me. This is the results from 1/4 of the burl. I plan to give it to my "new grandpa"!

I call it "Half and Half" because, as you can see, one half has a lot of burl and the other is swirl. There is a distinct line between the two, almost right down the middle! Don't know what type of oak it is but assume it is white oak.

It is 4 1/2 wide by 3 1/2 tall with a small foot. Wall thickness is very consistent at around 3/8". I know it could be thinner but I did not want to take a chance of blowing it apart.

I made it a simple form so as not to distract from the beautiful grain.

Critiques always encouraged!

That's one of the things I admire about you turner guys...you can sometimes find the best material in someone else's trash or scrap pile. Very nice work, Curtis.

That's a gorgeous bowl Curtis. The "New Grandpa" is going to be glad he didn't make bookends out of that hunk of oak.

Excellent way to employ that material, Curtis! You're doing a good thing using simple forms like this...so often we tend to shoot for "wiz-bang" when just uncovering the beauty like you have here is the best choice. Bravo!
