View Full Version : Help on painting toybox

I need help on my latest project....

I made a toybox out of red maple for my son, and thought that I had put the last coat of paint on it. The top however, is not a uniform finish. Instead, some areas appear to have a high sheen while others have more of a matte finish. I tried to attach a picture - hopefully it works.

Any recommendations on how to achieve a more uniform finish. Should I knock the surface down with 320 and then brush again? I do not have a sprayer, so brushing or rolling are my only options that I can think of.

Looking forward to the great advice that this forum offers!
Thanks,
Grant

From what I see in your picture you just need to add a few more coats, though without more info I can't tell for sure.

What kind of paint are you using? Oil or water based, gloss or satin, brand.

Steve - Thanks for the input. I am using Behr premium (orange borg) paint. I did one coat of the water-based enamel primer/under coater. Then 3 coats of water-based semi-gloss enamel. I did very light sanding with 320 grit between coats.

I'm not sure why the top looks so poor. The other sides look more uniform, but maybe this is because they are not as large as the top.

All advice is appreciated!

Thanks,
Grant
