Here's a vase I just finished from my most recent wood run. This wood has so many colors in it...I'm afraid I didn't capture it all. The wood had som red flame plus it was Ambrosia. The red flame sorta died down to pink though. It's 5" in diameter and 5" tall....Wall thickness is 3/16 but a little thicker toward the bottom. I did this one with the Hollowmaster...Sealed with some cut blonde shellac then finished with spray lacquer (hic):o

Thanks for looking!

Looks great John---I like the way you finished the bottom.
For some reason that's the first thing folks look at when they pick a piece up.
They always flip it over and check out the bottom.

Great look - wood and form. I love wood when there is an assymetry to the dark pattern.

John,

What an awesome piece. That wood is just plain beautiful and you did one heck of a job turning it.

Thanks for showing it off.

John, everything about your vase is wonderful. I, like Gary, think you did a great job on the bottom. I like to see a well turned bottom.;) Nice job.:D

But I worry about all you guys that see things in the grain patterns of your wood. I guess I am just an unimaginative non-visionary type of guy. I fear that being around all those lacquer fumes is gonna make you null and void.... :p ;) :D

John..........excellent execution! I like the shape, finish and I sure do like figured wood. I would recommend you and Ernie save some money and buy respirators if you're going to continue spraying laquer! I'm starting to worry....elephants...what's next snakes and spiders?:D ..........Just a thought!:p

Now see there Ken....You're making rash assumptions. I DO have a respirator! I just spray a little lacquer in it before I put it on.:p (hic!):o

John, It looks great. You really captured the grain of the wood. Does the grain of the wood help define how you want to turn the piece? Excellent quality of work.

Thanks again everyone! I appreciate your comments.
Jeff...Like most, I sorta let the wood tell me what it wants to be. This particular one, I really didn't have a thought in my head when I started it. Strange....I don't really have a thought in my head right now either.

Hey John, this is a good one! I also like that form. The wood is great, but I don't see no stinkin' elephant... maybe a hefalump or a woosle??? ;)

Thanks for the pictures!

And I can see some have been turning exotics and some have been spraying lacquer!:D And some are just about as normal as they ever get!:D :D

Great Job John!

My question is; Did you just get lucky with the pattern running the length of the vase or did you orient the blank in the tree to make it come out that way?

Does the ambrosia pattern run "top to bottom" in the tree?

Thanks,

Frank Stevens

Hi Frank,
Well, I got the wood as a 7X7 beam that was 10 feet long. It has Ambrosia scattered throughout. Seems like the pattern was maybe 12" runs of ambrosia in a variety of places. Some patterns are really wild...plus it has that pink coloration throughout as well. It's a very colorful wood that the pics just don't capture.
Thanks!:)
