Hi people! My name is Walt Quadrato I hail from Waterbury Connecticut(I think snow capital of the world right now) with my wife Ginny and I am 53. Long time lurker at the pond, first time poster here at the creek. I’ve gleaned a ton of good advice from many of you here and have used it in many projects; I thank you. My shop is a 24x24 “garage”(it’s never seen a car in 18 years). Most of my machinery is Delta gray with the major exception of the Jet 18” BS. I’ve been woodworking for as far back as I can remember; picked it up from my dad and my granddad. and, yes , I am a tool junkie and a packrat.
I’ve not noticed anyone reviewing the Jet retrofit canister used on a delta 50/850 DC so I thought I’d throw my 2 cents into the fountain. (Usual disclaimer not affiliated with jet delta or any sales outlet) I’ve had the DC for 2 ½ years now and I always put off getting the 1 micron bags for one reason or another. My ceilings are only 8 feet so oversize bags were out of the question. I’ve muddled through with the stock bags and the attendant surface dust for way too long. When I saw the Jet canister filters I thought “this is a perfect solution” Being on a budget and living in an area not renowned for woodworking I couldn’t really expect to sell the Delta and buy a new Jet so I decided to go the retrofit route. ‘Course it took 3 months before I saw the canister arrive. It came in yesterday and I spent the evening setting it up on my delta.
First off: the housing that comes with the filter isn’t particularly necessary. The diameter of the delta housing is ½ “ smaller than the Jet and while the Jet has a lip for the screw downs the Delta worked just fine. Though I may change over the housing to use the Jet snap on ring for the bottom plastic bag. It took about 5 minutes to change over the top & bottom (not counting the time it took to empty the old delta bags) fired her up and was surprised at the increase in suction. I use the system with an aftermarket trashcan separator and never had the galvanized can deflect from the suction. With the new filter it deflected a good ½ “ (popped back out when I shut it down). I use 4” PVC for the ducting (may someday upgrade that to 6” spiral pipe when I can afford it) with a maximum run of 20’ to the sander & drill press. Suction at the farthest drop increased dramatically while suction at the band saw left no residual dust inside the machine and decreased the amount of dust on the tabletop itself. Haven’t tried it out with the planer, CS and jointer but I will this weekend.
On the plus side it’s very low profile and the plastic bags will be so much easier to dispose of than the old “empty and mess everything up” bags. It came with 5 bags, more than enough for a while. Suction has increased and only time will tell if standing dust will be decreased. The one complaint is the knobs that tighten the filter to the housing are just a hair short when using the delta housing (that ½ “ difference). I shimmed them up with a couple of pieces of scrap. While this isn’t an upgrade for everyone ($189.99 at Amazon) if you already have a delta or an older Jet (and you can’t afford the cyclone route) this mod will greatly increase the amount of dust you can pick up at source. Anything that makes life easier is a boon when you’re 53. Thanks for listening.

Walt -

Welcome to the group.

Interesting comments on the DC retrofit. Let us know in the coming weeks how it works after it has a few hours on it.

Regards,
Ted

Thanks for the bio and the review. I've been waiting to hear from someone using the Jet cannister filter as I've been considering that upgrade myself.

Looking forward to seeing more posts from you.

I have been thinking about upgrading to the cannister for a while now. Thanks for the input.

Walt,

I too have the Delta 50-850 Dust Collector. I'm ashamed to admit that I just finished getting it and all of my ducting connected after having it for about a year . Anyway, I also have it connected with 4" S&D PVC. I have been using it with the stock 30 micron bags, but I thought in the future I might go to an oversized 1 micron bag or a cannister filter with a plastic lower bag.

It sounds like you like the cannister pretty well, but you mention that you are using it with a pre-separator. Is there a reason that you are still using the pre-separator now that you can easilly empty the lower plastic bag? I know that the pre-separator does eliminate the big chips from hitting the impeller and maybe that's why you are still using it. However you might see even more improvement in suction without it!

Also, you mention that the retrofit kit came with some kind of filter housing that is unnecessary. Can you clarify that? Is there a special retrofit kit made for the Delta, or is it more one size fits all?

Welcome! Glad to see more information on the canister DC systems.

thanks for the welcome guys. mark, yeah, the reason I'm leaving the seperator on is to save the impeller from unwanted visitors. I have my grandson in the shop on occasions and he loves to use the DC as a vacuum...he's always amazed at the size of the stuff it picks up. When he's older I'm sure he'll outgrow it. The kit came with a housing that's a perfect fit for a Jet brand DC. It'll take two drilled holes to match it to the Delta arms. Probably convert it over this weekend.

I, too, have been wondering about the canister setup. Thanks for doing the review.

May I suggest you use 6" plastic pipe, until you can get the spiral? Note that the intake on your DC is 6" (early ones are 7"). You should always use main line that is the size of the intake, then branch off with short 4" ones to the tool. I think that will help even more.

Hope this helps,
