Walt Quadrato

Hi people! My name is Walt Quadrato I hail from Waterbury Connecticut(I think snow capital of the world right now) with my wife Ginny and I am 53. Long time lurker at the pond, first time poster here at the creek. I’ve gleaned a ton of good advice from many of you here and have used it in many projects; I thank you. My shop is a 24x24 “garage”(it’s never seen a car in 18 years). Most of my machinery is Delta gray with the major exception of the Jet 18” BS. I’ve been woodworking for as far back as I can remember; picked it up from my dad and my granddad. and, yes , I am a tool junkie and a packrat.
I’ve not noticed anyone reviewing the Jet retrofit canister used on a delta 50/850 DC so I thought I’d throw my 2 cents into the fountain. (Usual disclaimer not affiliated with jet delta or any sales outlet) I’ve had the DC for 2 ½ years now and I always put off getting the 1 micron bags for one reason or another. My ceilings are only 8 feet so oversize bags were out of the question. I’ve muddled through with the stock bags and the attendant surface dust for way too long. When I saw the Jet canister filters I thought “this is a perfect solution” Being on a budget and living in an area not renowned for woodworking I couldn’t really expect to sell the Delta and buy a new Jet so I decided to go the retrofit route. ‘Course it took 3 months before I saw the canister arrive. It came in yesterday and I spent the evening setting it up on my delta.
First off: the housing that comes with the filter isn’t particularly necessary. The diameter of the delta housing is ½ “ smaller than the Jet and while the Jet has a lip for the screw downs the Delta worked just fine. Though I may change over the housing to use the Jet snap on ring for the bottom plastic bag. It took about 5 minutes to change over the top & bottom (not counting the time it took to empty the old delta bags) fired her up and was surprised at the increase in suction. I use the system with an aftermarket trashcan separator and never had the galvanized can deflect from the suction. With the new filter it deflected a good ½ “ (popped back out when I shut it down). I use 4” PVC for the ducting (may someday upgrade that to 6” spiral pipe when I can afford it) with a maximum run of 20’ to the sander & drill press. Suction at the farthest drop increased dramatically while suction at the band saw left no residual dust inside the machine and decreased the amount of dust on the tabletop itself. Haven’t tried it out with the planer, CS and jointer but I will this weekend.
On the plus side it’s very low profile and the plastic bags will be so much easier to dispose of than the old “empty and mess everything up” bags. It came with 5 bags, more than enough for a while. Suction has increased and only time will tell if standing dust will be decreased. The one complaint is the knobs that tighten the filter to the housing are just a hair short when using the delta housing (that ½ “ difference). I shimmed them up with a couple of pieces of scrap. While this isn’t an upgrade for everyone ($189.99 at Amazon) if you already have a delta or an older Jet (and you can’t afford the cyclone route) this mod will greatly increase the amount of dust you can pick up at source. Anything that makes life easier is a boon when you’re 53. Thanks for listening.
