View Full Version : Where might I be able to get decent sandpaper cheap

I apologize if this topic has been beat to death on here before but when I try to search for “buy sandpaper” I get the word ‘buy’ omitted and it only searches for the term sandpaper.

I am needing to purchase more belts and discs here pretty soon and I was wondering where people buy theirs at. I usually buy from a lady named barb (www.barbkat.com) and have been pleased in the past, but like anyone I am always on the prowl for decent paper at a cheaper price. I’ve also purchased from Online Industrial Supply and have been happy but they don’t carry the 6x80’s which is the main belt in need, Barb carries them but I haven’t found too many other sites that do. Specifically I use 5” 8 hole H&L, 3x24 and 6x80 belts.

Any sites/links/offers would be appreciated

Thanks

p.s. does anyone know how to search for those words that are too common or to short? I tried using quotes and bullion and neither worked.

That is an oxymoron you know. Cheap, good, and sandpaper don't belong in the same sentence:D

I now buy almost all my paper from Klingspor. My other source is Homestead finishing. I used to buy from Industrial Abrasives and they were cheaper, but one had to buy quantities larger than I could use in a reasonable time. As a result dampness got to the sanding belts, for instance, and they would fail. No economy in that. Now I buy what I need for the immediate needs and am more satisfied.

I recommend Klingspor if no else has mentioned it.:p ;) If you have one of their stores near you, you can buy paper, quality cloth backed Klingspor gold by the pound. Sometimes I find cut offs in their bins 12" wide and over 10 feet long. You can do a lot of sanding with that kind of quality paper.

Yep, Klingspor is my recommendation.:D

If you guys mean http://www.woodworkingshop.com then no there is none near my place (they only list 4 locations). Get out some cheese for this next one but I'm not going to pay 9 bucks + shipping for one 6x80 belt, thats just insane.

Does anyone have a recomendation that is not Klingspor?

What are you expecting to pay for a "decent" 6X80 belt? Are you actually looking to buy one belt??? If you are, go to your local Sears store.

You can get packages of 10 at a lower price at Supergrit, here:

Edit to add: I just looked at Barb's site (www.barbkat.com), mentioned in your initial post. At $4.25 a belt, and you are happy with the quality, I'm stumped as to why you are shopping around. That's a great price for a decent belt, IMHO. Better buy from Barb. Too bad Barb does not sell paper for Festool sanders. Oh well.

Aaron Koehl, SMC Adminstrator's suggested using Google: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/google.php

I've used it and it eliminates all those things like too few characters. However, newer posts, say newer than 3 days are not displayes, i.e., depends on when Google does their indexing.

For sheet sandpaper I've just started using Norton 3X. Try it out if you can, well worth the $.

For my disc's I like Klingspor mostly because they have the biggest selection.

The 6 X 80 belts I've bought from them were no better than Grizzly's. Time to try barb's.

Thanks for the link. :)

no problem Nic, afterall thats what this site is all about. I haven't tried her 6x80's yet but I have bought alot of the 3x24's from her. Granted its not an automated web server but she does answer e-mails in a day or so and the shipping is the true shipping costs. I just pay with paypal which is nice.

I have dealt with www.sandpaperworks.com (http://www.sandpaperworks.com) for drum sander rolls, but they don't list 6 x 80 belts in their catalog.

I usually don't like to say negative things about companies, but I have really been very dissatisfied with klingspor. I have tried several different products from them and felt all of them very poor quality. Even their bargain box of belts with off cuts has been pretty junky ( one way to try a lot of different type of abrasives )

for small ROS I am pretty well fixed on Mirka abrasives. I have been using them for several years and they are consistent and seem to really hold up. I just got a shipment of "on-line abrasives" from amazon and have not tried them. My gut intuition from feeling the sanding disks is that they are junk. I have used similar products that I think are OEM by them for other name brand companies and found them just a complete waste of money , but I will do a side by side comparison with Mirka products. Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised

for wide belts I have only heard good things about 3M but they are quite expensive. When I bought my wide belt I got several cases of belts and they last a long time in my shop.

I did try some small belts for my 6 x 48 sander from grizzly and they were absolutely junk - I would never use their stuff again. Grizzly uses a "lap" joint for those belts. They don't tell you that in the cat but in fact they are a lap joint. As far as I know the best belts are always but joined.

bottom line is go with

mirka and 3M

I try to buy most of my sheets, discs and belts from EconAbrasives. They are a mailorder and have a website to which you can guess their address. Their prices are good as well as their service. They cater to hobbyist and they are also a supplier to industry. However, their variety of selection is not as great as one would think from a company that specializes in abrasives because they don't have all the products that I find at the local hardware store.

Taking Mark Singer's advice, I started using Mirka on the disc sander. Been very pleased, I bought them on a trip through Pensacola FL, you can also get 'em through Amazon.

For Sheet paper, again at the advice of several SMC'ers, I use Norton 3X, seems to be the best I've tried.

As mentiond above, cheap and good ain't available in sandpaper, you can only get one.

EDIT: Check out a previous post I had, lots of great advice......... http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=17908
