Well, I was surfing through Yahoo Auctions, here in Japan (Ebay failed here) and I saw this large power planer.

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/round/ryobi_6_inch_power_planer.jpg

This is a Ryobi unit, not new, but it works just fine (that ruler is 30cm long, just about 12")

The cut on this thing is 155mm or 6.1"

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/round/ryobi_6_inch_power_planer_close.jpg
The blades were there, and they were covered in a build up of pitch and or sawdust, but, lucky me, they did not have one nick on them, they just were dull as could be.

I cleaned them up, and sharpened them with my Vertitis planer blade jig, worked like a charm. You can see the mess it makes, going to have to figure something out for a DC catch of some kind.

On thing I can use it for right away is to flatten the bowl blanks I am making out of all the off cuts and stuff I have from the Logging in Tokyo Saga. Rough bowl above....

Now that is one smooth bowl blank, easier and safer to put on the lathe.....(If I had a lathe..)

I'm working on a nice stack of bowl blanks, but I'm still waiting on the lathe.....

Oh yeah, this new Power Planer, it cost me a grand total of .............. $30................ :D

Cheers!

Great gloat Stu! Glad you found a way to redirect your frustrations over the shipping mishap!
Any word yet on when the rest of the lathe will arrive?

Lots to do around here anyways, so I'm content to wait, besides, the shipping snafu was TOTALLY self inflicted :o

Nice find, Stu. Knowing you, you'll have the chips from that planer diving posthaste into your DC in no time. It'll probably involve an old inner tube, some roofing mastic, and a couple of paper clips. ;) And a welded frame that can support a Toyota. :D

Speaking of tools, what's the yellowish-looking thing to the left of your welder? You know, the thing that's buried in bowl blanks?

That would be my Makita 2030S Jointer Planer combo unit...

Heck, it is even ......"Portable".......

I don't use the jointer, as I have the Green Meanie now for that....

Cheers!

Stu, good find. I've got a baby Craftsman version mainly for doors that I bought new, oh about 40 years ago. Don't use it much, but it has come in handy from time to time.

I am continually amazed at your resourcefullness in all phases of your WW hobby. :)

Thanks Karl, but in life, I've found that I get by a lot better when I "Adapt and overcome".

Just the way it is.

I have a little 82 mm (3 1/4") one as well, it is perfect for doors and such, this one is for beams and stuff :D

So I was doing some more bowl blanks, and I did not want to spread chips from the power planer 6" deep all around the shop (again) so I just whipped up my own little Black Hole.........

http://ablett.jp/workshop/images/jackpot/black_hole_apart.jpg
Just a piece of plywood, about 2' x 3', and I put two feet on it (the bottom is on the left side of the pic) and then two more blocks to clamp the sides too.

The 6" pipe is just screwed in place.

http://ablett.jp/workshop/images/jackpot/black_hole_back.jpg
Here you can see the backside of the black hole

http://ablett.jp/workshop/images/jackpot/black_hole_b4_the_storm.jpg
About to go into action, the Black Hole from the front.

http://ablett.jp/workshop/images/jackpot/black_hole_in_use1.jpg
I cleaned up the bottom of this bowl blank, nice and flat in minutes.....

http://ablett.jp/workshop/images/jackpot/black_hole_in_use2.jpg
.....then the tops side.

This gives me a nice flat even surface to then cut round on Big Blue, and I can see the grain better in the wood, so I can avoid problems, or keep more interesting looking stuff.

I know the Black Hole does not get "everything" but is sure gets a lot, and it gets the small bad dust.........

http://ablett.jp/workshop/images/jackpot/black_hole_cleaned_up.jpg
Then it is just a matter of a few sweeps with the brush, and I've got almost all the chips.....

I have the makia version of that, which is 6" wide - they run about $500 -
I believe that makita also makes a 12" wide one as well

For those who have seen pictures of my post and beam shop made from red and white oak beams, every single beam was hand planed using the 6" makita hand planer. Timber framers really like these units for doing just what I described. I had 2 6"x 12" x 20 foot long green oak beams that needed to be planed - can you imagine trying to put a ~ 700 lb beam through a planer !

nice tool

Makita, Ryobi, Hitachi, yep, they all make these units, 155 mm and 332 mm (I think) &"+ & 12"+

Cheers!
