Hi Jack!
On the same line is there any advantge to closing of the DC slide that leads from the cutter head to the 4" port.
Thanks;)

I put a 5" port on the Jet 6" jointer I used to own...putting a 5" or 6" port on the DJ-20 should be just as easy...and inexpensive with readily available materials.

Tyler...it probably wouldn't matter to "close" off the chute as you need to get air flow from somewhere that matches the port size. The cutter head will largely be directing material towards and down the chute and the air rushing in from "wherever" will move it along as it's supposed to do.

Joe just saw a 5" DC port for the DJ 20 on Amazon.

Shouldn't be a big problem.

According to the Bill Pentz site, assuming decent ducting and DC you don't need bigger than a 4" port. Has anyone tried larger and seen an actual improvement?

I use to have a 4" port on a PM60 and for heavy cuts it would just get blocked up and I would take the port off and let the shavings collect on the floor. Going with a long nose dust hood (IIRC Air Handling sells on) in a 5" or 6" size would be better. You're not really looking at the hood size collecting more dust just evacuating the chips better.

Yup, I've done it. I installed a 6" port on my DJ-20 by using an HVAC side boot piece. I found one at Home Depot that fit almost perfectly. A little plywood for ease of mounting and caulking for sealing and it was done.

Airflow improved too with my large cyclone. In my case a 4" hookup with 4" hood flowed about 800cfm and going to all 6" improved it to about 1100cfm.

Mind you I was never really concerned about airflow issues at the jointer, but I just couldn't put a 4" hood on that machine. :D

Cheers,

Allan

Yup, did similar to Allen when I got my DJ. I can't tell you about a comparison, as I never even fired it up before putting the 6" HVAC duct on it! Solid ducting all the way up to it and it's all hooked up to a Woodsucker Cyclone. Works great. Did a similar conversion on my Bridgewood table saw. :)
