Question On Replacing Power COrd

I'm interested in replacing the rather short power cord that came with my Jet Cabinet saw. The existing cord is 14/3 SJT type cord. If I'm going to increase the length by say 15 feet, should I get the next larger size (12/3). I've also heard some folks say to use SJO. Not sure why. Any reason not to use SJT since its what came with the saw?

If it was my saw, I would probably go with the 12/3. Either type of insulation "SJO" or "SJT" should be fine.

14-3 will work fine though 12-3 certainly won't hurt anything. An additional 15 foot is not going to cause enough voltage drop to be a problem. The SJO and SJT designate the type of insulation. Rather than worry about which letters are on the cord, just make sure its rated for at least 250 volts and looks tough enough to stand up to whatever abuse you may give it. I personally like a rubber type insulation such as the SJO or SO, but thats just my preference.

The "O" means Oil Resistant. I think the "T" means ThermoPlastic. If you think of the smooth, orange extension cords you get at the big box - that's probably SJT.

I'd use the SJO, if only because of the oil resistance. If you can, look for the yellow stuff - easier to see the cord when the machine's plugged in.

Probably won't matter in this case, but the SJO is more flexable than the SJT. It's almost like a cotton rope so it doesn't kink up as badly.
