Well was puttering around the shop and the wife asked me to make a pencil box for the table. So I had a short piece of spalted maple again from John Hart. I figured it has to be the same as a box but no lid. So here is what I came up with. It is 4 3/4" tall and 3" is diameter. Not much. It didn't quite come out like I wanted but I am learning. I kinda like doing these type things. Anyway here she be.

Bernie, great looking project there. I like that, but the wife was quite happy!

Looks really nice Bernie. Believe me, by next year, your wife will have more turnings around to put pencils in, than she will ever know what to do with.;)

Bernie---just think of the money you saved. You did not have to waste gas driving to town. Spend hours trying to pick out the correct pencil holder---heck you might of bought the wrong color.
I see where this lathe thing is going to save you a bunch of money in the long run. Christmas is only 10 1/2 months away.

Thanks I appreciate the comments. I really didn't have a idea for it. It just came out.The wife said she saw one at the office supply place for $24. Now she wants me to make one for her desk at work. Anyway it was a lot of fun.

Bernie, well you can tell her you will allow her to apply the 24.00 to the big lathe :)

That's a great idea Bernie.

I'd do the same thing, except I'd then have 47 unused coffee mugs with nothing to do.

Very nice. how did the bottom work out? I always have trouble with the deep ones. Saw an article on doing pencil boxes and they sugguested putting felt or leather on the bottom. that way you don't have to make it too clean.

Andy, you've never put ice cream in a coffee cup? don't lie;)

Pat the bottom is smooth as a baby's bottom. I bought one of those heavy duty scrapers that is 1 1/2" wide and 3/8" thick. It is round nosed with a side scrape. It works pretty good at clearing the bottoms and making them smooth. When I get it where I want it I just take real light cuts. Doesn't take much sanding at all. I think I just used 180, 220 and 320 on it. Then finished it with friction polish and a couple of coats of lacquer.

Pat by the way Andy puts ice cream in anything that will hold it!!

Bernie that's a real good idea. Now I have a use for all those boxes I break the lids on:) On a serious note my wife has at least 5,000 pencils in sets and individually. She's quite the artist. Don't even ask how many paint brushes she has.
