I am considering buying an Hitachi M12V router but have one concern. In a review, it said that, in comparison with similar 3hp and 3hp+ routers, it had the smallest base opening. Does this affect the ability to use raised panel bits? Is there a limit to the size of bits that can be used with this router? Thanks for your help.

Hi Bob - There are some tabs that stick out of the throat opening that won't allow a 3" raised panel bit to recess below the opening. There are two ways around that. 1. You can fairly easily remove the tabs 2. You can keep the bit above the throat plate and use the fence to nibble in.

FWIW, the Freud FT2000E has a similar restrictions, but it can't be cut out of the way.

If you going to use it table only cut them off. I did. There on to hole guide bushings. John Lucas of workshop has a nice article on perparing it for table use.http://www.woodshopdemos.com/cmt-jr6.htm

I have also read you can buy an aftermarket plate that accepts guide bushings if you need them later.

I have the older M12 (they don't sell the M12V in Japan, go figure) and I really like it. I set mine up as John Lucas recommends in his Workshop Demos pages, and it is a sweet set up.

Cheers!
