Well, I must be crazy becuase I am in the process of converting my jet mini lathe with bed extension in to an Electronic Variable speed lathe with REVERSE!
The VFD (Variable frequency drive) is already in the mail to my place and I am now just looking for a good 3 phase motor to use. My drive will only do 550 watts, so it will most likely be a 3/4 hp motor, but I hope that will be an improvement over the weak 1/2 horsepower of the stock motor. I have a feeling that even though the stock motor is rated as a 1/2 hp motor a "real" industrial 3 phase 1/2 hp motor will be quite a bit better.
I have to give thanks to J. Fred Muggs for all the help is has given me in both the electrical engineering department as well as trying to teach me how to turn.
