It was 54 degrees warm today and I was staring at the pond across the street and got inspired to make something I have been meaning to make all winter. For you great lakes boys, you'll recognize it as being a planer board used for salmon and trout fishing. A little cedar, threaded rod, brass tube, hardware and a little paint and voila! Just think, salmon season opens in 6 weeks! :D

Wow Lou, from your subject line I was afraid it might be an "X" rated thread. Bet that gave the moderators some pause. Good looking project.

I already know the answer (and never need directions either), but just in case someone else doesn't ;) what exactly does it do?

Kurt,

A line coming from a boom on the boat is attached to the eye bolt on the planer board and placed in the water. The geometry of the planer board causes it to travel parallel to the boat as it moves forward. The fishing line is attached to what appears to be a shower curtain ring with a clothes pin attached. This ring is now slipped over the line towing the planer board. The result is a fishing line being trolled 50-60 yds off the side of the boat and not directly behind it.There are two reasons to do this. One is that some fish are reluctant to hit a lure directly behind the boat due to the turbalence caused by the motor. The second is it allows fishing closer to shore in shallow water that the boat could not navigate in.
I hope I didn't muddy the water too much with my explanation.:o
