View Full Version : A week long little project

Well it is done. I have been working on this little project for over a week and a half. I just wanted to see if I could do it and I did and to give my lovely wife a valentines day present. But will more then likely never do it again now that I have done it once. Way to much work.

Since I was planning a little walnut for this project I thought I might as well plan some more to have on hand. I ended up planning 100 bf by the time I was done, and then I was done for 2 days:( Couldn't move except to get in and out of the hot tub with George.:D (George Dickel that is;) )

I didn't have clamps big enough for this project so I used what was on hand. In the ammo box is close to 30#s of staples. In the other picture you can't see the ammo box for the forest and nails and everything else that had any weight to it.:D

I was able to reverse turn this platter/wall hanger on the vacuum chuck, it worked great at 22lbs. I did find that there is a Lot of flex out the outside of a turning this big and there was no way to stop it even using one hand to hold the gouge and one hand to steady the other side of the wood. I turned it between 180 rpm and 370 rpm and sanded it at 100 rpm ( a day and half of sanding:( ).

As you can see in the last pictures that Mickey is happy and so I am happy. It finished out at 26-3/8" x 2-5/8". Now to add a room onto the house to display it.:o

I forgot, it is curly cherry and walnut.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the nice comment everyone.;) This was a challenge.

Looks like I forgot to mention that it is finished to 600 grit, with 2 coats of wipe on poly and Renaissance wax.

Nice platter, Dick. The contrasts of wood are great.

I would like to know if you ran out of blanks or ladder to stack on top of the pre platter while the pieces were drying? ;)

That is just way neat, Dick!!! Your bride certainly appears to be happy with it, as well! :) Only other thing I can say is, I'm wondering how long it'll be before you turn the coffee cup for that little saucer??? :D
