New to Turning

My third bowl attempt. I rough turned, used the DNA method and was finish turning when all of a sudden BAM! The finished product below. Well I'll try #4 this week, hopefully with better results.

Hah! You're lucky, Scott! I had just started hollowing out a bowl today, lost control of the chisel and the catch ripped the puppy right out of the chuck!!! My own fault for not making the recess a bit deeper and for not stopping when my hand started to hurt.:o So, you got further than me and I'll bet your next one will be seen through to completion! Just stay at it! :) :cool:

At least it's, or was round. My first little box went from somewhat round to flat on one side and it wasn't even in the lathe. Never made it that far, right in the scrap pile.

Don't cha just love the BAM! part? One microsecond later...all is lost. Sometimes I just stand there and wonder if I can glue it back together.:rolleyes:

One thing I can say is that it looks like you have a nice uniform thickness in the walls of that bowl. I hate it that you've had so much trouble with the catches and blowing up. It will take a while but you'll get the hang of it soon. You'll even get a few off the lathe too. Good luck.

Scott,
You seem to be having trouble with catches. Try the following:
On the outside, set the tool rest so your gouge is cutting slightly above center. On the inside, cut below center, left to right. Keep your handle at a low angle, with the bevel riding against the bowl.
