View Full Version : Compact Chuck Problem

I'm using a compact nova chuck on my 1442 Jet lathe. The Chuck goes on the spindle easily and bottoms out on the sholder of the spindle. The problem is that the threads extend far enough up in the chuck that it keeps me from closing the jaws completely. Should I be using a couple of nylon washers on the spindle to keep this from happening?

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim

I doscovered the same thing when I was demonstrating for our local Woodcraft store in December. If it were me I would return the chuck. You can shim it out with some washers, but that is going to introduce flex, which is going to mean problems trying to get your work trued up and running properly.

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that the Nova Compact chuck had all kinds of issues...and agree with Bill. Return it in favor of a different project.

Is this the the old "Compact" Nova (discontinued) or the new "Midi" chuck?

Jim,
The Nova Compacts were recalled, including mine. :( That thing wouldn't hold a toothpick in a gentle breeze! ;) :) The worst part is that I waited about six months for mine. :o On the other hand, the supplier (I think that it was Woodworker's Supply) asked absolutely NO questions in crediting my account. :D They apparently knew what I knew. :D
