HI
Ok, a little background first I guess.
I have 4 kidos, and a hubby. I am 25 and I live in tennessee. I am a stay at home mommy, hubby is the menager of the local advanced auto parts. I love to crochet but I have large hands and the metal hooks are to short to be comfortable for me. I got this idea that I would make my own out of wooden dowels from wally world. It didnt would out the way I thaught it would! In the meantime my hubby comes home and freaks out because I am trying to do this with my kitchen knife, and while I was cooking supper he made me one! I had no idea that he could do this stuff! He did it with a pocket knife and sandpaper. here are some pics, these are his first hooks ever! http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b255/shelain22/DWW045.jpg

So I started looking into getting some meterials that we could use to make some nicer ones with. I think all I need to start is a mini lathe, right? The wood blanks I am finding are all to short though! How do I find blanks that are at least 8 inches or so? Any advice for a newbie

I am going to post this in the wood turners section, thank you for looking!

Valerie,

Welcome to the Creek. I'm not a wood turner, so I can't help you out with that one, but there are lots of turners that will give you great advice. I would, however, warn you that the turners are a crazy bunch.;) So, watch out and make sure you think first before actually taking any of the the advice.

You're going to love it here at the Creek. We have many ladies involved with woodworking, especially turning.
