for some cold rolled steel.
I've decided to make some tool rests and a couple of other things. Maybe use some on a hollowing rig.
Anyway, I slipped by Texas Iron and something or other and bought a 20' length of 1" bar stock. I paid tax and all $57.00. So, even if it is too much, I should certainly make up for it with just a few rests.
Do those of you who make a lot of your rests, buy stock like this?

Ernie a 20' piece of stock???? Did you buy a 30' lathe? Should be enough to make us all some:) I'll take mine with 3/4" dia pin to go into banjo.

Ernie, 20' of stock, depends on how many rests you are going to make. four, should not take any more than 8' and last a life time.
Price was good though, as for me, working in the heavy industrial trade for 40+ yrs, I never had a need to invest in any type of material of that mature, however now that I am retired, at times it is a different story. Stock pile is going down.:(

That's about what I was thinking, and four good rests would cost me a bit more than that. They wouldn't sell less than that and the rest I may use for the hollowing rig.

Ernie I don't think that is bad at all. I paid $41 for a 20' piece of 3/4". Had enough left over for 2 each 6" straight and 1 each of 9" straight, and one with a 3 1/2" radius for bowls.
