This is what I did to break in the DVR. It's apple burl, 8 3/4 around and 4" high. The top is 3/16" thick but then gets thicker towards the bottom and not as deep as I would have preferred. Wood was lifting up in patches as I got near the bottom and I didn't want to risk going thru, especially after making a funnel from a nice apricot bowl I took home to finish after my lesson with Bill G :( . The finish is 2 coats of Bush Oil so far. I apologize for the poor picture quality, gotta get me a photo booth like Johns! Comments, criticism welcomed. Thanks for looking.

Ed,
After a lesson with Bill G, how can it be anything but SPECTACULAR. This is an extremely good looking piece both from a wood and skill stand point.
Excellent job!
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ed, that's quite the bowl, some interesting wood. I was just out surfing and reading up on several procedures for stabilising wood. Most have been proven a failure, for larger pieces, ie. bowls and such. However one is most promising. I have several pieces of wood that are ratty and need attention, before turning. I hope to know in the near future if I was at all successful or not.
Thanks for showing your first DVR turning, looks great in my window.
