Hi,

I'm getting better fixing damages, but this one is going to be tough. The only thing I can think of is coloring it using something like Mohawk products (something I've never done / used before).

My wife and I sanded a coffee table that we thought was solid. It had very thick veneer and we sanded through a corner. 2x2 or so. My wife mixed up the paints and painted the grain back on. It is darn near perfect and WOP'd the whole thing

Could I put filler in (putty, wood filler, etc?) get that to be smooth, paint to match, and clear coat?

Yes, if you're good. Practice on some scrap that you intentionally damage first.

The ideal thing would have been to find and reuse the chip. If I was to repair it, I would take a piece of scrap wood to make a tiny bit of veneer, clean up the edges of the chipped veneer, and glue in the wood repair. I hate using putty.

That's a good idea too.

I feel like gluing in veneer never goes as well I wish it did. But it is a potential solution.

I also would find a grain match and glue that in vs putty. Putty always looks like a novice repair vs veneer which is an honest attempt at repairing the damage. Just take your time.

You can cut the edges of the damage to a more measurable/manageable shape. That helps. Maybe sand the glue squeeze out to fill any gaps a little. Old brown glue or CA glue would be my choice of glue.

You also might try contacting a furniture repair specialist in your area. A good one can work wonders and, depending how you value your time, might not be that expensive.

To replace the veneer it's best to remove it from edge to edge. Here's a repair I did on a cabinet which, fortunately, was only a short section with very consistent veneer.

With your cabinet, replacing the veneer is more of a challenge for grain matching, and the damage is to such a small area that I would hesitate to remove a large section. You could try to replace the veneer in just that small area, but you will still likely have to add some magic and graining to make the joint disappear. If it's a success, great. If not, you can always remove it and then go the wood filler/paint route.

This is the bigger picture. It's the huge 42 x42 x42 cube thing on the left side of the photo. The damage is on the customer door facing edge

Yeah, true. And make it a triangle so that the edges are more likely to disappear

Do you have overage with the same flitch pattern? Would be pretty easy to match if so. Looks like a commercial space which typically has a bit more tolerance for dings, but take it from someone who has experience in the matter, don’t show up without a solid plan you are confident in. That is what nightmares are made of.

Worked! Woot

These are the colors I used (hickory). They won't give you color advice over the phone for I guess liability reasons. Wouldn't it be nice to have that low of liability.. lol.

The light colors were a bit too yellow..

The sticks I didn't use.. but probably would have worked too.. I think the wheat is too yellow looking?

If you want to spend money in hurry, be sure to buy sticks from these guys though. : )

I think I spent almost 200 in two markers, 9 colors, and one gloss clear coat pen
