Well between company and my wife asking for me to do something I did get a bowl turned and finished. I just put lacquer on it because it won't be for eating. Just displayed as my first bowl. It is black locust. I turned it green 18 days ago and soaked it DNA. There are some things I could have did better and some things next time I will do different. Overall I am pretty pleased how it turned out for my first bowl.

There's nothing wrong with that! Very nice for a first or fifteenth bowl!!!!

Remember though, this is coming from a guy waiting for his first lathe to arrive......

Bernie, tuck it away and use it to measure progress. A lot better than my first bowl. Keep up the good work!:D

Hay Bernie,

Great first bowl. I like turning black locust. I don't think you saw the one I turned last year of black locust. Left it on the lathe over night, the next day it was unrecognizable. It now sits at the end of the lathe as a trash receptacle.

Some say it's a piece of art.

Yessir, that's a great first bowl! You should be proud of it. Like Mike said, keep it around and on display!

Thanks for the kind comments. Like I said it will be a display model and as Mike said a gauge from now on. I learned a lot on this piece.

Jim you are absolutely right. It turned really nice green but boy was it hard after it dried.

Real nice bowl, first or otherwise. Takes a lot of patience, sharp tools, and a few cuss words to turn anything from locust.

Good looking bowl Bernie. I see you did not fall victum to the fate of many new bowl turners by making the sides and bottom meet at right angles. I like the gentle curves. You picked a hard wood to start with, keep it up, my good man.

Inspirational Bernie...I'll have something, about 5 years from now, to look forward to.

Thanks again. Like Jim K. said, black locust when dry is like cutting concrete. I think I will find some other wood to do more learning on than that although I have one more blank of it. I will probably start working on some of the wood John H. sent.

Way to go my friend! You did really really good and have set the standard for this beginner to reach for when I get beyond the skew and to the "bowl" part of spinning

GREAT job Bernie.... I know you are proud and we are just as proud for you :)

Looking good Bernie!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on the 1st bowl and like Big Mike stated earlier, tuck it away for later down the road. You'll be amazed at the progress you'll make over time as you refine your processes and your forms. Congrats Buddy!!!! You did real good. :D

Bruce this was dry and like turning concrete. Fun and learned a lot on it. Hoping it will make the next bowls a little easier. I bought a 9" square by 4" thick piece of apple and a 8" square by 4" thick black cherry. Maybe these will be easier turning when dried.

Thanks again for the comments. I appreciate it. I was pleased with how it turned out.

Very nice bowl. it'll be great for nuts, fruits or whatever. Only one thing missing, don't forget to put your name and date completed on the bottom so you'll remember when you did it and be able to compare to six months or six years from now. You're family will enjoy seeing your name and the date too.
