Overlays

I want to make overlays for my grandfather clock Hood. I want them to be Walnut burl. What's the best way to go about doing that? Make my overlay and then veneer the burl over top of it?

I may be alone but I need clarification on what grandfather clock "overlays" are. Thanks.

Sorry Glenn, I should have explained more. I try to post a picture but I'm not sure how to do that yet. On the flat part of the hood or crown of the grandfather clock, it would be a decorative applique usually flat with the burl wood on the surface. Usually several pieces. Mostly three. I've seen. The centerpiece kind of looks like a keystone.
