As this mess is on the top of my bench
513458
Left overs..from 3 projects...thickness ranges from 1/8" up to 3/8"....all are Ash..
513458
There are also a few 1" x 1" square stock pieces hiding around in the shop...

Will see what the "Sketch Up" comes up with....Need to get these out of the way, before the next "Stash of Ash" arrives later this month..

Had an issue with the last Project..in that I ran out of Spring Clamps......Shopping trip today eased that a bit....6 new spring clamps are now in the shop..and more MIGHT be on the way...

Stay tuned..

Somewhere in the back of my head is a comment about clamps...

'If you're tripping over them on the floor, you've almost got enough'

Hmmm..Wood Project is on hold, for a few days...
513602
This thing is not getting fixed...there are BAD brazed joints...sole will never be flat, again....
513603
However,,for $3..I picked up this Stanley No. 80 body...to replace it.
513604
There are 2 out of 3 bolts that were broken off in the #80....will drill those out and re-tap...
513605
Iron has been sharpened , and given a decent burr...new bolts, new tap and drill bit...retainer plate cleaned up and polished..

Have to dig out the Easy-out set...maybe tomorrow...been a rough, BUSY day, today.....Busy, Busy, BUSY...

Stay tuned...

Waiting on the black paint to dry, at the moment...old bolts drilled out, tapped new holes..2 thumbscrews now have a hole drilled through them to allow a rod to help tighten, or, Loosen the bolts..Bolts fitted to the body...seem to be a hair too long...oh well...Sole of the plane is flat,, and polished up.

Will fully assemble and try things out..once the Black Paint is fully dry...

Stay tuned..

Photos or it didn't happen?
Ok
513694
Bolt details..
513695
Back plate...bolts have 1/4" washers under them...
513696
Sole is clean and flat...
513697
Against the grain, and over a knot..test drive in Pine..
So, now I have 2 such planes...
513698
Both are No. 80s....
513699
Tools needed..
Stay tuned...

To be continued...
513715
Back to gluing up panels, again..
513716
Have a few to do..

Ok..shop is actually rather toasty...outside? 5 above zero, NOT counting Wind Chill....
Panel #1 is out of the clamps...and #2 has taken it's place..
513779
Panel #3 has had it's mating edges jointed..
513780

Panel #1 is getting the glue joints scraped down..
513781
Yes, that is the same No. 80 I had just rehabbed..
513782
Note to self: Raise the plane up, on the back stroke...that screech can be heard a LONG ways...
513783
Had gone to the shop, on account of Laundry Detail.....waiting on Panel #2 to exit the clamps, so I can clamp up Panel #3...

need to sort through the rest of the pile..
513784
And see what other panels I can make use of..

Stay tuned...

Ok...panel #2 is out of the clamps, and is getting scraped down..
The "Before"...
513941
And..the After...and the No. 80 was being pulled towards me, due to the direction of the grain..
513942
Panel #3 is now in the clamps..
513943
Extra caul in the middle, because the middle wasn't staying lined up..

Right now, I have these set aside..
513944
Until I decide what sort of box I am trying to build...these 4 panels..
513946
I decided to rip for a certain width..because of one panel..
513947
That ugly knot had to go...

Trying to decide on where these 2 will go..
513948
I also have 2 solid panels a little bit thicker...maybe a base and a topper/lid? Maybe the curvy stuff for under the base?...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
01-18-2024, 3:22 PM
Now, about those 2 curvy parts....cut-offs from another project.
Would be nice to have them smoothed up, and at least match each other?
We have ways...
514026
Spokeshave? Seymour Smith & Son...clamped up "jig"?
514027
No...I am not worried about any marks left by the c clamps..as a through mortise will be going through there...

I now have parts to make 4 sides of a box ( with enough left over for a second box) and at least a base..
514028
Base has had the better looking face beveled at 15 degrees...then the planes took over..
514029
And rounded the edges down and under to the underside
514030
Used both the Stanley No. 3, Type 11 and the Stanley No. 60-1/2.....block plane was more to work on the end grain ends...

May try to do some finger/box joints at the corners of the box...by hand. Might see IF a small tray could be added, too.

Awaiting the next Laundry Detail to happen....so I can just hang out in the shop, waiting on the washer to get done...?

BTW: those 2 clamped up parts with all the curves? The one straight edge on each also had to match....so
514031
NOW they match. Last panel to be glued up? Has been cleaned up, awaiting a place to be used...

Lid for the Box? Might have hinges? And Maybe a latch? Curvy parts are to be the "feet" for the Base...

Stay tuned...

Yesterday was one of "Them Days"....decided it just wasn't safe to go to the shop...and mess around with sharp objects.....took the day off...

May put my work boots on, today...and see how a Friday in the shop turns out.....have Laundry Detail, today..anyway..

Stay tuned....

Nice work Steven. Looks like you have some more good tools to work with.

steven c newman
01-19-2024, 9:24 PM
Giving them all a "second life" and putting them to work..
514107
Lay out work...3 diamonds on the 3" square..
514108
Then a bit of handsaw work...
514109
Then some chisel work...twice..then..
514110
A dry fit of Corner #1......yes I number the corners..to keep track of what goes where...

Also spent some time...with the #3 handplane...to round over the edges of the blank for the lid....

After spending about an hour replacing the lock set in the bathroom door.....getting slow in me dotage?

steven c newman
01-21-2024, 9:00 AM
Might try again, after Lunch, today.....yesterday had other projects to do...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman

Corner #2...
514217
Dry fitted along with Corner #1...

Corner #3?
514218
Also dry fitted together...and, Corner #4?
514219
Trying to hide? Also dry fitted....clamps have been pre-set...helps when doing a glue-up...not as much fumbling around.

Bench does have a spotlight, for when I need a little extra light..
514220
Tomorrow being a Monday..complicates things a bit...May be later afternoon before I can get out the glue bottle and brush..

And figure a way to keep this squared up...
514221

As for the spaces of the "fingers"..
514222
I use the same chisel I use to chop out the waste...about a 1/4" wide..

Tracing around..
514223
I use a very sharp No.2....then use the 6" combo square to carry those lines up and over...

Stay tuned..

Yesterday being a Monday (In every sense of the word) Shop was closed.

Task for today ( after Lunch) is to glue the 4 sides up into a box like shape...and hopefully keep it squared up at the corners..

The just MIGHT be Blue Streak coming up the shop's stairwell....

Stay tuned....

steven c newman
01-23-2024, 4:13 PM
Spread things out..
514317
Keeps things in order, while I get a bottle of glue and a brush....LOTS of fingers to coat, NOT counting mine..then the clamps came by..
514318
And keep checking for square as I went...
514319
Had to move this mess off the bench,,,had other tasks to do...will let this thing sit a spell...clean it up tomorrow?

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
01-24-2024, 4:06 PM
Out of the clamps, today...needing cleaned up...and checked to see IF it matches up with the base...
514358
Took a while to square up the outside all around...not real concerned about the inside..
514359
View along the Front/back...and...
514360
The end view....panel for a lid?
514361
Just was working out...despite all efforts to reduce the lid's size...
514362
May re-think a lid...maybe just a flat panel?

We'll see what happens....may use the Lid as a base for another box?

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
01-25-2024, 8:29 PM
Box has been glued to the base..
514426

So...a flat panel for a lid...problem? Panel is too thing for the hardware's screws....as the panel is just 1/4" thick..if that...so, how to make a thin panel a bit fatter?
514429
Glue on a "frame" with end grain showing at the end of the panel...that even matches the grain...glue up?
514432
One on each end...then cut and fit the 2 sides....corners are mitered, BTW..
514433
Let this sit a day, then clean things up...and get it to match the box...then do the hardware stuff...hinges and a latch out in front. Might even add a handle or 3? Maybe stained with "Special Walnut"?

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
01-28-2024, 1:24 PM
More "Lid Work"..
514600
Both out of the clamps...edges needed cleaned up..
514601
Checking for gaps..
514602
Clamp the 2 parts together in the vise...
514603
Grab a few tools, and install the hinges...then flip over..
514604
Install a latch..
514605
Awaiting a Finish...

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
01-29-2024, 7:12 PM
Special Walnut stain by Minwax..
514692
And a few letters....been a bit too "stoved up" the last couple of days...seems I do not bounce as well as I used to could...2' drop to the floor in the middle of the night..rolled over the wrong direction...Face Plants are starting to hurt....

Box does have a coat of Amber Shellac brushed on...will need rubbed down..then we'll see what kind of top coat...
514694
Wondering what I can cobble out of this mess....hmmm

Stay tuned...(Where's me heating pad at?)

Steven,

Nice project and an attractive and useful way to use up odds and ends.
