Two more hopefully quick glue ups and I’ll be read for the two 34” breadboard/cramp joints on my dining table. I’ve seen a few tools and methods for accomplishing this joint. What do y’all use to do this joint?

Mine would be a draw bored dowel in the center and slots in the tenon to allow for movement on the dowels towards the edges.

Have used two ways to add a bread board edge to a panel....smaller ones use a Tongue and groove joint...(Norm Abram used this on the New Yankee Workshop...And added a fixed pin in the center. With a pair of slotted holes near the ends of the tongue)

Then, the other way I use...is a sliding dovetail...with a dab of glue added just before it is slid all the home...meaning the last 1" or two will be glued in place.

My concern with breadboard ends is the possibility they will loosen and sag, which would be very unsatisfactory. To prevent this use glue on the center 3 to 4 inches. Then do as you please to secure the ends while allowing for expansion.

I do slots in all the tenons, save the center. The center is drawbored and I leave the breadboard end long but a bit, since it will unlikey ever be flush in the future.

Looking forward to it Steven.

At this point (and I’m almost to the point where I need to decide), my biggest question is whether to square up both ends* and use a moving filister OR work from a line across and use a rabbit plane without a fence to sink the rabbit on both sides (and not worry about both ends being square).

* using a handsaw makes this seem daunting. Almost has me considering a track saw.
