IF anyone wants to follow along? Recently laid in a supply of 1 x 6 Ash planks...about 52 bft worth...got the shop ready...bench cleared of action...
509519
Even ran the Stanley No.5 -1/2c around a bit, had a few high spots to level out..
509520
First 2 planks arrived in the shop..
509521
These needed to be rough cut to length @ 41"....
509522
And get rid of some split ends..
509523
Then, since both were tapered a bit, best edge against the rip fence...set to take a smidge off...move the fence again, place the freshly ripped edge against the fence, and skim off the other edge..
509525
2 planks, with no tapered edges, and all parallel..then find the exact center....reset the rip fence to split that line...
509526

Clamp the 4 together, and let them sit a few...I now have 4 stiles for the 2 Frame and Raised Panel sides of a 5 drawer Chest of Drawers ( keep wanting to say "Chesta Drawers)..Finished length will be ~40-1/2"

Next episode? Milling the rails, and a start on the panels...Goal is to fully build the sides of the case, first...THEN fill in the insides...first with web frames...then 5 drawers, and then got the bread board top out of the clamps and onto the case.
Stay tuned...

2 more planks to the shop..do a bunch of cross cuts..
509545
Just over 11" long...rip fence then to the saw..need 4 pieces ripped to 2" width...need 8 pieces ripped to 1-1/2" width..
509546
8 skinny ones will be the middle rails...the 4 wider ones...will be at the top and bottom of the case's sides..
509547
2 sides..2 bottom rails...laid out for a spacing layout..
509548
And that was as far as I got...

needed to bring a couple more planks to the shop...as I needed 8 more blanks for the raised panels...already had 2..so..
509549
Used one of those 2 as a length gauge..and rough cut the other 8....there WAS a bit I couldn't quite use...
509550
Split ends, anyone?

Set up the rip fence, again..
509551
Goal was to get one good edge on each...then reset and run the freshly sawn edge against the fence...to get a decent, parallel width...
509552
Ends will need squared up...then find out how LONG they have to be...then make them into raised panels..

Stay tuned..( been in the shop 5 times, so far, about 1 hour each time..)

steven c newman
10-28-2023, 11:27 AM
Blanks for the raised panels have been squared up on their ends..
509561
Will need to be trimmed to their final length, once I figure that out...

Panels will reside in grooves. Very hard to use a Stanley 45 on the narrow rails,,,fence gets in the way...so.
509562
We have ways....also, it would be nice IF the groove in the stiles was the same...took two set ups..
509563
First set up..2 passes per edge (that will get a groove) then move the fence in a hair..
509564
to clean out the strip down the center..again, 2 passes, to make sure this is centered..while this worked for the rails..the stiles were first resaw down to 3/4" thick, before they were grooved..
509565
Since the stiles USED to be 7/8" thick..now they match the thickness of the rails. Will leave the raised panels alone.

Rails need tenons..
509566
Consistent tenons...
509567
as in 24 tenons that are all the same...
509568
12 rails, means 24 tenons, had to remember to do both ends..

Next up? Maybe a bit of molding work? miters ? Mortises to be chopped? Once the "frame work" is fitted together, I can start on the Raised Panels..and get them fitted into the frames.

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
10-28-2023, 11:36 AM
Miters? Well, the rails fit down into the grooves..
509569
With a mitered corner where the grooves meet up..
509570
Which means a miter cut on the rails..
509571
And something like this on the stiles...so that the molded edges will meet in a mitered corner...
509572
And the inside is flush...(detail from another Project chest of drawers)
509573
Hard part will be cutting the miters to match..Dovetail saws, and chisels will work....along with a Mortise chisel to chop a 1/2" deep mortise for the tenon..

Stay tuned...pretty sure that some cussing will get involved...

steven c newman
10-28-2023, 5:37 PM
Ok..needed to set up the router table, today
509611
And mold the outside face of all the grooves..
509612

As this will be meeting up with a raised panel..
I also needed to do a miter cut..
509613
mid rails got all 4 corners.. top and bottom rails, only the grooved edge...
Because the rails need to settle down into the grooves..
509614
And the molded edge looks like a mitered corner..

Needed a few other tools, today..
509615
Along with the mortise jig..

Have one mortise chopped..only 23 more to go

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
10-29-2023, 10:08 AM
Raised Panels would be nice..to help set up the rest of the mortises...
509620

Shop does not have a "panel raiser " plane, nor a router bit..so..
509621
Tilt the saw blade to ~15 degrees...run all 4 edges through...reset the blade back to 90 degrees..
509622
Takes two settings of the fence and the blade..to rebate the inside of each panel...times 10 panels

Might leave the inside of the panels rough sawn...
509623
As the only things that will see this view, will be the sides of the drawers, on their way in and out

Plan for today?
509624
Chop these 3 mortises..and start on the next stile?

Stay tuned....more than welcome to stop by and help out...

steven c newman
10-29-2023, 12:42 PM
So..IF you do have that sort of Panel raiser plane or Router bit....by all means, use them. If is was just a couple panels, I'd use the No.4 plane like Paul Sellers does...but..10 panels? Meh, not today..

Note: 5 drawer fronts are scheduled to MATCH this style of raised panel....

Will use a panel to check the lay out of the other three mortises,,,and then get to chopping. Thinking about15-20 minutes per mortise...we'll see how my arm holds up...

Stay tuned...( Son is doing laundry for HIS work clothes, today....may have to wait for the shop to cool down a bit, before I can get to work..)

steven c newman
10-29-2023, 4:39 PM
New 80 grit sanding belt..vs 5 raised panels....to get rid of the worst of the rough sawn look.....then
509640
Stanley No. 4-1/2c, Type 11 to get things smooth...

Last 3 mortises on this stile are done...time for a very dry fit..show face?
509642
And the rough sawn inside face..
509643

Need to clear this off, and start on Stile #2 out of 4 stiles...

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
10-30-2023, 2:44 PM
Was having issues while chopping mortises into Stile #2....as I was using a panel to check spacings...while the mortises between the 2 stiles lined right up...trouble came when I tried to add in a panel.....somehow, the panels no longer fit the spacings? had to go back and re-do the rebates on the back of the panels..all 10 panels..? Panel width was also (now) too wide...removed a blade's width..try again..
509681
Now they slide around? Humidity? Changed by almost an 1/8"?

At least, I did get 4 out of 6 mortises chopped and fitted, Last night..
509684

Today being a Monday....so unless I get VERY BORED...shop will be closed for today....had enough "Monday-itis" last night..

Stay tuned...waiting on Tuesday to blow in with the wind...

Just bored, and thinking aloud...

IF my posting these "Build-along Blogs" inspire others here to post some of their own....maybe a chance to see how others work on their Projects?

I do have some tidy-ing up to do...but will save a glue-up until tomorrow. Work sessions only last an hour..maybe 90 minutes, before I have to stop...and, trying to keep sawdust out of these new eyes..

I really want to do a build along. In the new year when I can actually build something in reasonable amount of time. My daughter says she wants some more display things. I can't wait to start another one. Recovering from knee surgery today and it will be a week or so before I he'd to the basement.

steven c newman
10-31-2023, 2:43 PM
Taking today off....last night had a HIGH fever...could not get warmed up, and stop shivering....then, during the night, the fever must have broke...because I was soon a sweaty mess...

This morning, still felt like crap...food doesn't taste right...I don't think I would be very safe around sharp objects in the shop....will try again, tomorrow..

Tony Wilkins
10-31-2023, 2:44 PM
Hope you feel better.

steven c newman
11-01-2023, 6:42 PM
Felt well enough this morning, to go for 2 hours of shop time, today...

Last 2 mortises were chopped and dry fit up...Raised panels needed sanded and planed flat...rails and stile also were planed smooth and flat....

Then the cussing could begin..
509772
Must be something to do with there being 13 parts that have to go together..all at once...with glue spread on the tenons with a brush..and five clamps...two of which were pipe clamps...checked for square...not quite there, yet. We have ways..
509773
Needed a wee clamp to pull the diagonals...until this..
509774
Said I was square...always leave enough room under the clamps, to slide a square under them..
509775
Will let this sit until tomorrow..no rush...

Back at the bench..
509776
NEXT! have to start on Side #2...only 12 more Mortises to chop....

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
11-02-2023, 12:51 PM
Maybe later today, I might venture back to the shop...kind of sore today.....

Somedays, I just sit down on the job...
509793
Easier on the back, that way..

steven c newman
11-03-2023, 12:45 PM
Shop time last night...6 mortises chopped

Shop time this morning..mortises #7, 8, 9, 10, 11 were chopped, and a dry fit was attempted
509844
Decided #12 could wait a while..
509845
As it just might be a problem....that be a big old nasty Knot hiding in thar....

Road trip this afternoon...Long John Silver's Fish to bring home for Supper tonight...

Both stiles will need a bit of bandsaw work..
509847
After I trace around this pattern. I also need to clean up and flatten the stiles....then we'll see about a glue-up? Side #1 is out of the clamps, BTW...

steven c newman
11-04-2023, 4:08 PM
Side #1 is out of the clamps, and set aside..for now...let the cussing begin!
509888
No. not at this one...
509889
THIS one. Had to pull the diagonal back into square..
509890
By a BUNCH..
509891
BTW: anybody ID this clamp?
509892
Spring loaded keeper, and a few notches...too far apart..

At least the bench got cleared off..
509893
I did have to use cauls at each end....clamps wanted to fold the stiles either up or down...
509894
I prefer..FLAT!

Let this sit a spell..and let ME sit a spell....but...I do need my tablesaw back....maybe in the morning, I can clear it off..we'll see..

steven c newman
11-05-2023, 8:01 PM
Was a wee bit busy today...BEFORE Lunch..
509924
Milling parts for 6 webframes..
509925
6 fronts, 6 rears, 12 runners...and still have more work to do.

Webframes to connect these 2
509926
And give the 5 drawers something to ride on...

Rough sawn, needs thinned down to 3/4"....got the runners done, at least
509927
Need to do the longer pieces, next..

steven c newman
11-06-2023, 8:11 PM
Prepped the stiles...
509958
Needed resawn to 3/4" thick, ends trimmed and square..
Runners needed tenons milled..
509959
Once they had been trimmed square...Stiles needed grooves to match the tenons...
509960
Still need to mill some Kickers...then maybe some assembly work?
509961

Working way too hard for a Monday?

steven c newman
11-07-2023, 6:04 PM
Both sides are now out of the clamps...
509995
and just chilling, for now..

Have all the parts to make the 6 webframes...
509996
Runners needed both their tenons made..
509997
And counter sunk Pilot holes drilled..
509998
Stiles needed a groove milled..
509999
Was easier just to mill the groove, than chop 24 mortises..all on the end on the stiles..
510000
Trying to get 7 GOOD sticks to make the drawer kickers with.
510001
Was a bit of a challenge..
...also had to dig up the Hardware..
510002
As there will be nails and screws involved...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
11-07-2023, 6:21 PM
Assembly of the Webframes..
.510003
Involved these items, and a bottle of glue...and a square...glue on the tenons of the runners..square to set the runners into the groove on the stile...and then the clamp to pull things tight.
510004
Hammer is to drive a pair of nails at each corner...

Next, center a kicker and pilot hole drill to set up for the screws
510005
Use a square to set the other pilot hole and screw the kicker down...with a blob of glue under the kicker.
510006
1st one done....4 more like this one...
510007
One frame hold the Top Drawer's kicker...then 4 for the rest of the main drawers...however, Bottom drawer has a different set up..
510008
2 "kickers"? well, these 2 add a bit of support right at the bottom of the case, and support the face frame's bottom trim piece. I have to watch where these 2 go...
510009
So that they don't rub the drill's chuck, while I am attach this frame to the sides of the case.

Made a mess of the floor again..
510010
As all 15 parts ( to get 7 kickers?) needed resawn down to 3/4" x 1-1/2" x 14-3/8".....

Tomorrow, I get the 2 sides of the case to match each other EXACTLY....then run a rebate on the back stile of each...to house a 1/4" plywood back for the case...might take most of tomorrow's shoptime? Still have to BUY the plywood panel 1/4" x 4' x 4' handy panel....

May sort through the remaining planks..and see about 5 Drawer Fronts? and set aside enough for a bread board top? We'll see..

steven c newman
11-08-2023, 5:16 PM
Planes were in use today...clamped the 2 sides together..
510060
Jointed the edges to match each other...one had a hill about halfway along...flattened that..
510061
Stanley No. 8c seems to work just fine..

Feet needed trimmed to match each other...then the bottom edges of the sides needed to match up.
510062
No. 80 was put to work..
510063
Then time to mill a rebate..
510064
Fancy plane? Sargent No. 79 sold by Sears, Nickel plated by Eric Brown..
510065
Made a lot of Krunchies..
510066
Got one rebate done...ran out of gas halfway through the other one..
510067
Figured that was enough for one day...

Eric was asking about whether that plane had made shavings yet...look like it did..
Stay tuned...

steven c newman
11-09-2023, 2:43 PM
We have work to do...
510116
Cut a plywood panel for the back...add parts to build a face frame with...then either a top or 5 drawers to build...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
11-09-2023, 4:59 PM
Ok...6 piece have been cross cut for length..and ripped for widths needed 2@ 2" wide, and 4 @ 1-1/2" wide..Plan is to cut 3/8" deep dovetails on each end. and chop the related sockets.

There is ALMOST enough room in the shop, to tablesaw the back of the chest from a 4' x 4' panel....panel is cut and installed..case was pulled square once one side was attached..

And THAT will be enough for today....

steven c newman
11-10-2023, 9:15 AM
Photos?
510155
Back panel installed....had to set this on it's front, on top of the tablesaw last night....glue and screws along one edge..rotate the case on the tablesaw..pull the case into square with a long clamp...then attach the other side to the case..

then return the case to the floor......right leg is a bit crampy, this morning..
I WAS going to do dovetails for the Dividers...but...
510156
Cut for a tight fit, glue and clamps.....had to pull one or two frames straight..with an extra clamp or two...

Bottom Divider will need some bandsaw work...and I need all them clamps for the next 3 Dividers...

I did miter one of 4 corner braces, and installed it..
510157
These also need a slot milled in them..as this will be where the top of the case will get attached to the case....with a screw & washer. Slot is to allow the top to expand and contract as the seasons change...always fun to do...as I have to reach inside to access those 4 slots...

Stay tuned..

Richard Hutchings
11-10-2023, 9:43 AM
I WAS going to do dovetails for the Dividers...but...

Don't the dividers need to be below the frame like you have them? I've never built anything like this but I hope to give it a try one day.

steven c newman
11-10-2023, 10:43 AM
510161
This is what I WAS going to do....but, the sockets would have to been chopped out with a chisel..and hope they fit the tail exactly...

Drawers will be 3/4 overlay...top and ends will get a rebate, but not the bottom edge of the front....Dividers and the top of the frames are to be flush with each other...

Right now, IF this crampy old right leg permits...the other 3 dividers need to be done....the bottom one will be a bit fancier...
510162
Will try for something like this...from a smaller chest of drawers I made..
510163
Last year...
Maybe have this new one be part of a match set for the bedroom?
510164
We'll see....

steven c newman
11-10-2023, 7:43 PM
Busy day...for a Friday...
510171
Bottom 3 dividers installed...note the bottom one.
510172
The other 3 corner braces were installed...and the 1st one has been reinforced,,
510173
Once the clamps come off the other 3 will also get this done.

needed to rough saw enough blanks for 5 drawer fronts..had just this left to choose from..
510174
So..picked the best..and..
510175
Bundle them up for a couple days..to get them used to being sawn..same with the parts to make a panel for the top of the case..
510176
Alternate wide and narrow...all of these need to be resawn to 3/4"....MIGHT even have enough left over to add the Bread Board ends...if not..we do have a couple to chose from..
510177
However,,,that is also the last of that 52 bft of Ash....drawer sides and backs will be Pine...drawer bottoms will be 1/4" plywood.

I do have a friend with a LunchBox Thickness Planer..( used to be mine, BTW)..MIGHT haul a few boards his way tomorrow? We'll see...

Stay tuned..

Steven, I am impressed. I get that I am working a demanding day job and you are retired, but you are busting this thing out in the sort of time frame that makes a retriever dog just sit down on the sand and watch while a greyhound comes zooming back from way far away; after the retriever dog gave up on the outbound chase.

11-13-2023, 3:56 PM
Whenever I go to the shop to work...that is what I do...work. Other than taking the Photos people seem to want..there isn't any standing around going on. Rarely take a break until I am done for the day.

Today being a Monday...shop was closed ( unless I get very, VERY bored) but...a road trip to a friend's barn, where my old Delta 12" Lunch box planer resides..hauled those 2 bundles along...they are now within a 64th of 3/4" thick...left a hair to allow for planes...I also took along 2 shorter planks to take any snipe going on, and save the good stuff from the sniper...

Planer might have been a bit hungry, today..as it took a bite out of one end of a "good" board....seems there WAS a large knot hiding there...was. Friend happen to have a 3/4 x 6 x 6' scrap of Ash in his scrap pile...he threw that in with the rest of my boards...to replace the chewed up board.

Thickness was checked as we went, not trusting the depth scale on the planer...so..a Lufkin 6" Stainless Steel Caliper, No. 456 was set to 3/4".....most of the boards measured at a 64th over.. figured that was close enough. Bundles and the 1x6 plank are back in my shop, now....and I need a nap.

Monday means the shop is closed...so maybe tomorrow, I can get back to work? Wednesday I get to stock up on a stash of Pine 1 x 6s..to make the drawer's sides and back with...then maybe a bit of "Drawer Building 101"?

Stay tuned...

11-13-2023, 5:01 PM
Photos?
510384
Tablesaw is a bit crowded...was working on the case...
510387
Had to repair a split...fill a few cracks, and..
510388
Finish up the braces in the corners of the top...

510389
One of the drawer front blanks...
510390
This is the "better part" of the 1 x 6 I brought back home....the other part?
510391
has that big old knot...
510392
Which I think just might wind up in the Fire Pit, at some point...

510393

I also need to clear this mess off of my bench...and get the tablesaw cleared off as well...need to size parts for a panel glue up..tomorrow...
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
11-14-2023, 2:07 PM
Bench has been cleaned off a bit...had work to do...
510408
Cordless Jointer...Lufkin Tinner's Rule as a straightedge...
510409
Trying to close any gaps going on....first layout of the top's panel...
510410
A couple of knots to work around..but, not too hateful...

6 boards jointed, and glue and clamps...
510411
And clamps and cauls on both ends..
510412
The 2 cauls will soon be the bread board ends..once the panel is out of the clamps..and squared up....have not decided how wide to make the BB ends, yet..

One of the blanks for the drawer fronts, was rejected...because of too many issues on one end..
510413
Right where I was going to bevel the edges for a raised panel look, and a 3/8" rebate for a 3/4 overlay...and where the half blind dovetails where to go...rest of this blank will go towards a December Project.

Router was set up with a small cove bit..and run around the outside edges of the case...but not along the back
510414
Was not enough solid wood back there.

BTW...when a Lunch box planer finds a knot...
510415
Noisey, BAD things are going to happen...

waiting on glue and me to dry out...and get the glue up off of the tablesaw...have work to do...
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
11-15-2023, 4:57 PM
Ok...it is not known as "Hump Day" for nothing....3rd Wednesday of each month, is PayDay...after paying the bills this morning, and a bit of Grocery shopping...a stop at Lowes for a few 1 x 6 x 6 "White Wood" boards..
510508
Trust me..you do not want a clearer view of these 5 "boards"...best of the rack, after picking through 20 boards...

Got back home, things were unloaded...Lite Lunch....then to the shop....pipe clamps were removed, and the panel was set aside, for now..
510509
Safer to leave the cauls in place...Drawer fronts needed sized to their openings...
510510
Couple weren't square, couple were a bit long...and a couple were too wide bodied...Plan says I need a 3/8" wide rebate on 3 out of the 4 edges...had to allow for that.

Fronts needed beveled, too..set things up, and run a test piece..
510511
Took a couple tries to get things just right...then run the 5 parts through..
510512
Supposed to look like this when all is done..
510513
Back to them rebates..
510514
Done with the tablesaw....easier than hand plane work for 15 rebates...test fit?
510515
A bit too tight...Drawer #4 was being a PITA, today...

Stay tuned...( there are 21 photos, after all)

steven c newman
11-15-2023, 5:07 PM
Ok...to house the drawer bottom...I need a plane..
510516
A Type 20 should do the job..once I get it assembled..
510517
Clamp a drawer front to the bench..
510518
Groovy, Man!
510519
Been a bit busy? Rebate along the top edge of each drawer front, needed a bit of cleaning up..
510520
Ward's No. 78 this time around...
surface was feeling a bit rough, too...
510521
No. 80 took care of that....

Got 3 out of 5 Drawer Fronts done and fitted....then the toes started to cramp up...back between the shoulder blades too...decided to take a break for a while...
510522
Sweep up the Krunchies and head upstairs....and chill out for a while...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
11-15-2023, 5:17 PM
Besides all them Krunchies on the floor...
510523
Tablesaw was busy, making a mess on the floor...
510524
Swept up all the piles...but..
510525
Kind of need to empty the can first?

One tip while doing raised panels on a tablesaw...
510526
Once you start a cut..NEVER slow down along the way...unless you like burn marks...

Stanley #45 with a 1/4" cutter...makes a lot of shavings..

That you will need to clear after 5 or 6 trips...Also, I have an old plain candle, I can rub along the groove, to help the plane glide along...

May or may not try again later today...depends on how the body feels....can't work 12 hours days IN the shop any more..2 hours seems to be about the limit.

Depending on the weather this evening..I might take that trash can to the burn pit...depends on any wind...

Stay tuned...

Lets see..last night, snuck back down to the shop,,and finished up the grooves and rebates..and left a mess on the floor..
510628
This morning..needed to move the tablesaw out of the way...grab the fence, though..
510629
As I will need the fence for this thing..once I drag it out to where I can use it..
510630
As it is already set up for use on a router table...
510631
Including "Start & Stop" lines...because...
510632
I need to mill a BUNCH of these...the 4 wider drawer fronts weren't too bad to do, but #4 Drawer?
510633
Wanted to be special....wider rebate at the top, too....first set of sockets were made with the grooved bottom edge against the fence...the sets for the other ends were done with the rebate top edge against the fence
510634
While trying to match the socket spacings at the other end...

After all these were done..then I had to take the Boss to Wall E World....while there..
510635
Package of 10 knobs? 2 per drawer? works for me....

Maybe later tonight, will haul the Lowes Planks to the shop? Need 10 drawer sides, and 5 drawer backs...and zero knots....we'll see how THAT goes

Once they are cut to size and fitted into the drawer openings...I can complete the dovetails..and maybe do some assembly work?

Stay tuned..

Ok..Lowes Lumber...1 x 6 x 6' Whitewood planks....picked through 20+ boards to find 5 that MIGHT work...cross cutting for drawer sides, first..
510647
Needed 5 pairs....next...rip these into sides that will fit the drawer fronts..
510648
Looking just a loose fit....where they just slide right in...

Some sections of these boards...
510649
Thought MAYBE this was just a bad edge...
510650
Other edge, same board...good thing I bought extra?

Next...for right now, I need 5 drawer backs cut to length...
510651
Will worry about ripping to width later, when I find out how wide/tall they need to be in each drawer..one size does not fit all, in this case

Some of the sides are a bit bowed/cupped...we have ways..
510652
Stanley No. 4-1/2c, Type 11...
510653
They would have to flat saw a log here....

That will be about it, for one day...back is hurting, right between the shoulder blades...I feel a Tonic & Gin is in the cards for tonight..

Stay tuned...

I've read and re-read this thread a few times and will probably do it again. I'm still not quite ready for the workshop so I living it through you. I was just looking at those routed dovetails and they appear to be extremely long?? Also, I know you've told me before but you have an affliction for plane numbers with a c following. What's that about?

steven c newman
11-17-2023, 3:17 PM
Dovetail sockets are for 3/4" thick sides..
510688
Which is the sides of the drawer...as for "c" model planes?
510689
When one is working across resiny Pine boards, the grooves prevent the plane from sticking to the board...But...I can just as easily switch to the non-c models, as all my Millers Falls planes have none.

Planes with a "c" in my shop..Stanley No. 3c, No.4c...no No.5s have groovy soles..There is a Stanley No. 5-1/2c and the Stanley No. 4-1/2c....a No. 6c (2 !) a Stanley No. 7c, and that No. 8c..
The No. 5-1/4 is smooth soled..and is a Millers Falls No. 11, Type 2

Tails today....used the sockets to mark them out...then..
510690
I use a bandsaw to make all the cuts, on the waste sides of the lines....Because I can SEE a lot better where the saw is going...and a few extra cuts help with waste removal..
510691
Got the sides for the top 2 drawers fitted..
510692
They can stay here, out of the way...

No. 3? Back was starting to hurt, camera was getting a low battery...so, after one end was fitted..
510693
Will start off with this piece, next time..
510694
Yep, old No. 8c will be back at work...
Stay tuned..

Last night, decided to haul a plane down to the shop...and of course just had to do a test drive....Since that side for Drawer #3 needed planed flat..
510761
Plane was made by Millers Falls, and sold at your local Sears Store, back in the day....iron is stamped as a Fulton, Lever cap says Craftsman...side of the plane says Craftsman No. 3709 Made in USA..
510762
Anyway...wound up making a mess on the floor ( hard to stop, when a plane works so nicely, ain't it?)
510763
To the point that both faces of the board were flat...went ahead and cut the tails and installed the side into Drawer Front #3 and stashed the drawer out of the way...
510764
So, later after Brunch has settle through the System...maybe I can get the last 2 sets of sides done? Then start on the grooves & Dados?

Stay tuned...

By the way...a Millers Falls No. 9 is about the same size as a Stanley No. 4 plane. Be sure to add a few squiggles of candle wax to the sole before use...

Quitting time! last 2 drawers have their sides fitted...then the bottom drawer and the top drawer have got the groove thing done..

Just got back upstairs from the shop 2 hours of shoptime, today..
Film when I get them processed..and me dried off..and a big bandaid on the left hand's back...
Stay tuned...

steven c newman
11-18-2023, 2:35 PM
Last set of tails done..
510778
New jig is ready to go...
510779
So I can start these..
510780
Sides did need a little work, again..
510782
To get some of them a little flatter...

Busy day?
510783
You could say that....didn't even feel these...
510784

Fresh DNA on a Project...

Last dovetail Tails were on drawer #5...started the grooves on the sides of that drawer..
510785
Hey, they even line up! Drawer #5 is done as far as grooves are concerned..then I start in on Drawer #1 and got it done...then decided to call it a day..until after Football?

Stay tuned..

Just got back upstairs...from the shop...last of the grooves are done

First 2 dados are done...but not with the Stanley No. 45..

Mortise gauge to define the lines..
Backsaw to cut down to depth needed...matches the depth of the groove

Chisel to rough out the waste...
Stanley No. 71-1/2 to "plane" the floor of the dado smooth and flat

Film in the morning...Drawer #4 has it's dados done. may reset the holding jig, tomorrow...current one is not hold very well

Not sure what the problem is with the #45...yet...may have it set a tad too deep? Trying to take too big of a bite?
We'll see..have to "sleep on it", I guess....

steven c newman
11-19-2023, 11:56 AM
Ok..research on that #45 plane set up...
1)..bad jig set up...part was moving around in the jig, trying to leave...New Jig..
510821
Part stays put, now..
2)..depth setting was way too deep..was even below the nickers! raised the cutter up to just shy of the nickers depth...

3)..Drag the #45 backwards a few times to set the nickers into the wood,,without trying to actually plane the dado...stop there
4)..Jackson Backsaw..
510822
Use it where the nickers exit the far end of the cut, saw down to the final depth of the dado...prevents any big blow-outs there..
5).. plane the dado..
510823
That little square? not too worried about it...will be gone away, later...
IF the floor is a bit rough...
6)..
510824
Clean smooth with the router..plane. Test the fit..
510825

As for that little square? I always add a starter bevel to the drawers I build..
510826
Makes sliding a drawer into the case a lot easier..

So..issues with the Stanley No. 45, Type 4.....depth was just too deep...was cutting BEFORE the nickers could reach the wood..and a better holding jig helps out, too..

2 drawers now have their dados done...only need to mill 6 more dados...and those "Starter Bevels"..then mill the backs and the drawer bottom panels....might get this done, yet..

Stay tuned..

Looking very nice Steven. Going to be a tight squeeze going up your stairs.

steven c newman
11-20-2023, 9:57 AM
Need 2 more dados milled...Drawer #5....then, rip the blanks for the Drawer backs (5) and then figure out HOW to saw the panels for the drawer bottoms..so I can do some assembly work.

Top is about ready to be planed flat, and the Bread Board ends installed...maybe this coming Friday?

Don't have enough 3' long clamps to do all 5 drawers at once...maybe 2 a day?

Might just be a Busy Week? "Busy, busy...BUSY"

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
11-20-2023, 5:53 PM
Laundry Detail tonight...was just standing around, waiting on the washer to start the Wash Cycle...decided to just finish up the last 2 dados...and was done before the washer was done filling up..

Will have to go back down to move the load over to the Dryer...may move a few other things around, too? As I need my tablesaw back out where I can use it..

steven c newman
11-20-2023, 7:22 PM
All 5 drawer backs have been ripped to final width and fitted to their drawers....One drawer bottom has been cut to size...despite it's best efforts NOT to be cut..waiting on the Clothes Dryer, now....makes the shop too hot to work too long..Think THAT will be enough fun, for a Monday...

Had to temp. add a pair of screws to Drawer #4...to hold A drawer back in place...
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
11-21-2023, 3:33 PM
Adapt Tablesaw to rip drawer bottoms..
510946
1 x 1 as a rip fence.

Unplug the saw, flip the switch to "ON"...then get this in place on the saw..
510947
Then plug the saw in..and run it through...pull the plug, again..set the "cut-off" aside..repeat until all 3 panels are done..
510948
Rotate the saw 90 degrees, so I can crosscut to length...

Seems the dados are 3/8" deep....plan was for 1/4" deep, to match the grooves...back were already cross cut to the plan length...means I have a toe-in at the back of the drawer..
510949
Will need a clamp to even out the toe-ins...then add a couple nails under the front groove, through the panel...to lock things in place

Backs are glued and screwed in place..
510950
But where the bottom panel meets the drawer's back...
510951
Screws alone will work...
510952
4 clamps? Back one to hold the panel in place for the screws....2 to clamp the dovetails with, while the glue sets up...and a diagonal one to even the toe-ins...once the screws and nails are all done..
510953
I can leave one clamp on, and stash the completed drawer(s) in place...out of my way.....Drawer #4 just needs glue and screws, and a couple nails.

Which leaves 2 drawers to do, tomorrow.....
Stay tuned...

11-22-2023, 3:25 PM
5 drawers.....
510986
Done...

Slots to mount the top to the case...
510987
Done. I drill through each corner brace...then...
510988
Rock the drill front to back a few times. Allows the screwed down top to expand and contract....
Next up?
510989
Flatten this panel, add the Bread Board ends..and attch the top to the case,,,,always fun...have to stand the case up on the saw or benchtop..to access the slots ....after centering the case on the top. And hope it doesn't move around...screws will have washers, BTW...slides better.

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
11-23-2023, 4:42 PM
Top has been leveled..
511036
Ends have been trimmed square..
511037
Used a router the mill the tongues...
511038
Then cleaned up with hand tools...
511039
Milled the matching (almost) grooves on the tablesaw...and did the dry fits..
511040
Needed to joint the edges of the grooves for a closer fit..

Then?
511041
Let this sit a day, or two...
Stay tuned...

steven c newman
11-24-2023, 9:39 AM
One item on the list...might involve the bandsaw today...
511061
Look down at the bottom of the Chest of Drawers...at them skinny legs...that vibrate everytime I go to move this thing around in the shop.

So..out in front, a block will be added to each leg...grain direction being an "Issue to be worked out" to where I can glue and screw them in place...maybe Bandsaw a few curves to dress it up a bit? Film at 2300 hrs?

Around in back? just a triangle, with glue and screws? Tablesaw is rather busy at the moment...and it does not do curves....we'll see how things go along, today...
Stay tuned...

( editing photos at the moment. Even broke a bandsaw blade...good thing I had a spare hanging around)

steven c newman
11-24-2023, 2:42 PM
The Brackets, today..
511076
That needed pilot holes drilled at certain angles..
511077
So that the counter sunk screws will work...without splitting things..

Test for fit..
511078
And the back ones..
511079
Glue and screws and a clamp around in back...front ones?
511080
No c clamp needed....but the bracket needed shaved just a bit...to hide from view....in fact, a lot of edges were "shaved"
511081
With what else, but the S. Smith & Son Spokeshave...

Got the last bracket in place..
511082
Then stood the case back up onto it's four feet...

Drawer #4 needed adjust for better fit...
511083
Used the #78 as a shoulder plane...

Might need a helping hand, or 2...when it becomes time to LIFT the case up onto where ever the Top is sitting...so I can attach the 2 together...
Will see how things go along...

Stay tuned...

Time for a PIP?....Top has been installed..front corners radius-ed with the belt sander...Cove bit run around the edges of the top...Witch's Brew brushed on everything, and wiped down..
Then hang up the apron for the day....
511147
Take a peek?
511148
Not showing enough?
511149
Other corner?
511150
Top's details...and of course..
511151
Full Frontal view....letting the dust settle in the shop for a day or 2....then start the top coats...thinking Amber Shellac?

Pictures?
511263
Top after one coat...
511264
Again. after one coat..
511265
5 drawers, one coat on the fronts, only ( I do not apply finish to the insides of items like this, takes forever to get the smell out.

Amber Shellac..
511270
Brushed on, straight from the can...

Top and the left side of the case have been hand sanded to 220 grit...and given a 2nd coat...

Stay tuned....looking at a Nov. 30th delivery date...might just make it?

steven c newman
11-29-2023, 8:34 PM
Plan for tomorrow, as it stands right now....haul the 5 drawers upstairs...set them on the bed...unload the old 4 drawer chest of drawers and move it to the curb. Then haul the case upstairs and place it where the old one was, complete with the Boss' wide screen TV on top.

May even take a few pictures, once it has been delivered...IF anyone wants to see them...?

steven c newman
11-29-2023, 9:25 PM

Will try for better lighting in the room once the glare from the sun is gone...
511356
It sits at the foot of the bed, and also serves as a TV Stand. Boss also has a hamper at that location ( Laundry Detail, again?)
511357
That is the 4 drawer "Night Stand" that I was trying to match up to...

Camera does NOT have a Flash, for some odd reason...so I may have to find a way for more light in this room...

Old 4 drawer chest of drawers was the Boss' folks from LONG ago. It is now resting out on the curb....will see how long before someone grabs it...

Stay tuned...

If the old chest was solid wood, I'd be picking it up and using the wood. That's how I roll. I've gotten some really nice maple and white oak that way. Close to an inch thick. Very usable for hobby stuff.

Chest of Drawers is done, and been delivered to the Bedroom. I do have some "Leftovers" that I MIGHT resaw down a bit...otherwise, I think a short vacation is in order?

Have to clean and put away a lot of tools, and get the bench cleaned off....

Thanks for following along!

Hey Steven, it looks really nice. Good job. Might want to wax the drawer runners before loading them up.
