Some Maple harvested recently from my FIL's farm. It was rotten in the middle, but big enough I could get some pieces from the edges.
It has a two-tone color, as you can see. Also loaded with "specs" of some sort. Not really birdseye markings - just specs... kinda neat wood. I lost a few small pieces of bark, but for the most part it held on pretty tight.

Beautiful job Mark. I love the wood and the form is as cool as it gets.

What a pleasing, flowing shape! I find the challange in NE bowls is to not make them look like a heavy clunker of a boat. If I turned one with that shape, I would be very happy.
Nice turning. How did you choose to finish it?

Thanks guys... nothing special on the finish... just sanded thru 600 and two coats of gel poly wiped on, then buffed.

Keith, the foot is not the bead I've been doing. It's just solid foot formed out of the tenon.

Beautiful form, Mark. I have some maple with those "flecks" in it. Don't know what they are. Some of them are even reddish colored.

Not too bad. Not too bad at all.
Be a shame not to put it to good use with some Chocolate Burnt Almond.

Chocolate Burnt Almond.
You must be talkin' about cake or cookies, right? Cuz the only ice cream in the world is homestyle vanilla. I don't allow no furrin' flavors in this house...;-)

Jeez!
I thought you southern boys knew all about "seeing the light".
Next chance you get, haul your butt up here and I'll teach you a thing or two about furrin' flavors.
Vermont Blueberry - Russian Nesselrode - Caramel Pecan - Burgundy Cherry - and so forth.

In the Southern Bible, book of Hesitations, chapter 1, verse 1, it says... "Thou shalt have no other flavors before me, sayeth Homestyle Vanilla."

And that is a bad thing? Mark, Russian nesselrode is something polite Southerners do not talk about in public. :p ;) :D

Russian Nesselrode? I had a friend who knew someone who saw that movie I think. I don't think we should be talking about that in mixed company though.
That aside, Mark, the bowl looks great. Nice form with the natural edge.
As for ice cream, give me rum raisin, extra rum please.

Another beautiful piece Mark! Big sucker ain't it. I've seen those little specks in some of my maple. I think it's a pre-spalting fungus. But that's just a guess

Mark this NE form is near perfection, and one others should emulate when turning their first NE. Thanks for posting such a beauty.
