i'm building a farmhouse dining table for my fil in vermont.the top is 5/4" maple with a dimension of approx 39"x84".i'm concerned with seasonal wood movement,so i probably should not use pocket screws to hold this top on.i think i'll use these from woodcraft.http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=1036
could i use pocket holes on the long aprons and use these on the end aprons, since there won't be too much longitudinal change?
also i would like to reccomend osbourne wood products as i used their farm legs(don't have a big lathe),ordered them on sun had them at my door today.http://www.osbornewood.com/1121.cfm.thanks fred

I've used pocket screws. Just ream the hole out on the apron where the screw comes through, not all the way through the hole though.
This gives it room for the screw to actually move with the wood.

I usualy made a small piuece that I screw into the apron in the corners at a 45 debree angle then screw through that into the top

I've used the exact same tabletop clips in your link for end-tables with good results. Spend a few minutes on some scrap getting the height of the biscuit cutter for the slot set just right and they work good. I've found they work best when the slot is located so just the last couple turns of the screw snugs the top to the apron.

Figure 8s would work fine too, but are not as traditional.

I use the same ones from Woodcraft on all my table tops. They work very well.
