View Full Version : Just as I thought - 2 lathes are better than one

I put my newly acquired Woodfast M408H lathe to the test this afternoon working on a pet urn for a family member. The second lathe came in real handy while working on a threaded top. The only complaint is the different spindle sizes. I'm still on the lookout for a short body Vicmarc with a M33 spindle, which would make the setup perfect.

Are 9 lathes better than 2?

I have been cutting back, and now, I am down to four lathes. Soon to be three.

So far I'm winning, but might seal the deal by showing the big one!

I'll jump in with 6 but only 4 of them are wood lathes.

Just add a spindle adaptor so that all of your lathes can use the same chucks.

But, if you are needing an excuse to buy a Vicmarc that is another matter...:)

Great idea on the adapter but not so fast. I tried finding an adapter to go from an M33x3.5 spindle to 1 1/4 x 8 but couldn't find one. Going in the other direction is easy peasy. Any idea on a source?

No excuse needed on the Vicmarc. I'm committed to finding one come he** or high water.

I have the Baxter Threading jig. I find a second mini lathe essential for threading. I can leave my thread cutter on one lathe, and have the other for all of the turning rather than taking the cutter off and on, and off and on...... I only have 6 lathes..... The wood lathe is the best Christmas present I ever got myself.

Nope. Those are easy to find. I need to go from 1 1/4 x 8 (female) to M33 x 3.5 (male). In other words I have a 1 1/4 x 8 spindle on my Woodfast lathe and a good assortment of chucks that are set up for M33 x 3.5.

Steve, I think you have written it both ways in your posts, "from an M33x3.5 spindle" and " from 1 1/4 x 8 (female)":

If it is going from 1 1/4 x 8 (female) to fit your headstock to M33x3.5 (male) to fit your chucks, there seems to be very few options. The only one I could find was the following, see part number AD-204...

Expensive, but no more than, for example, a double adaptor.

But, if it is going the other way then the Nova adaptor will do it...

Oneway confirmed for me in an email this morning that they don't make what I need. I ordered the proper adapter from Best Wood Tools yesterday and they even confirmed within a few hours on Sunday that it was the right one. With that kind of response I may order their threading jig.

+1 for BWT. Their products are high quality. I recently purchased a 33mm to 1¼" adapter (not the one you want, I know) so I could use my own chucks while taking classes as MASW. Worked like a charm, with no detectable run-out.

I have 2 - 12x36 lathes set up in the shop and a third mini lathe on wheels. One is for turning between centers and face work and the other is for drilling, final turning etc. The little one is for quick jobs while the other two are set up for what ever I am working on. For instance, when I make some things, I need to turn a square to a round to fit the chuck on the other lathe. Mount in the chuck and drill. flip the piece holding inside the hole and turn the final shape. For the bases, turn on a face plate, drill a shallow hole, switch lathes to hold in the chuck and finish the bottom and edge. So much easier than changing accessories back and forth.
