With a deadline, to boot. Sept 1st. Cataract Surgery, Left eye....so, this will have to be finished before that Friday morning.
Left over Pine from building the Chisel Rack
505928
There are a few items I need to remove...
505929
Yep...
505930
Looks like a job for a Mitersaw?
505931
Results?
505932
I also found a Pine panel for the bottom of this box...just need to cut a few items for length..
505933
so that I wind up with parts of a small box
505934
And for a lid...with a collar to house the lid's panel..
505935

Still...these do look a little too thick?
Stay tuned..

So..set up the tablesaw to rip a couple items to width..that wide collar piece became 2 collar pieces..and they and that long stick were ripped to the same width.
505937
Reset the fence to 1/2" from the saw blade...and run a few parts through..
505938
And the sides of the box..
505939
And the 3 pieces to make a panel for the lid..
505940
Trying to make 3 boards look like one?

Did have ONE kickback..
505941
These are all cut-offs..and one just happened to flop over after I was done with the cut...

I did manage to get one glue-up done, though..
505942
Need to get this out of the vise, today....so I can start on the dovetailed corners of the box...May not be "London Pattern" ones...but then again..I don't live in London..

Stay tuned..

Panel is out of the clamps, cleaned and flattened...one end needs squared up
506101
Not much...will have to build the collar to get the final size needed...nice to have a square corner to work from..

Same old, same old..pins first...trace around the completed pins to lay out the tails...then a dry fit
506102
repeat 3 more times..and use a few clamps...but no glue..yet..
506103
Because I needed to mill a groove around the sides along the bottom edge....and rebate the bottom panel to match

Small parts, smaller than the planes I might have used....tablesaw to plough a groove 1 and a 1/2 blade thickness wide...3/16" deep...then took a few tries to get the bottom panel to fit into all 4 grooves, and still close the corners....
506104
I also needed a spacer made...to keep the long sides from bowing in during glue up...
506105
That block plane did come in handy..to fine tune things...then glue bottle, a brush to spread the glue around, and then add those clamps back in place..
506106
Let this sit overnight...
Stay tuned...

Tuesday Morning...clamps came off...time to clean things up a bit..
506107
Check for square..looking for high spots..
506108
Like that corner on the right....
506109
once all 4 sides were done, then the bottom was worked over..
506110
I did try the Sargent #410c...but it was leaving a lot of black streaks behind...switched to the Stanley No. 4-1/2c,Type 11...seemed to do a cleaner job..then flip over and level the top edges..
506111

So...tomorrow, I might get these 5 parts cobbled up into a lid, of some sort?
506112
Stay tuned...leave the lid panel flat? Or..raise the panel? We'll see..

Planes used, so far?
A Rogue's Gallery..
506113
With a 6" Stanley SW No. 20 Bevel Gauge for scale...

A Stanley No. 60-1/2 Low angle Block Plane

A Sargent, made for Sears...No. 410c ( the one leaving all them black streaks across the Pine)
A Stanley No. 4-1/2c, Type 11....with the 3 patent dates
506114
Small knob, small wheel, triangle logo on the iron.

Also in use was a Stanley SW Type 14/15 No. 5....as a small jointer...for when I glued up the panel for the lid..

Some of the other tools in use...besides that Millers Falls No.72c...
506115
Disston No. 68 Dovetail saw
Stanley Marking Gauge SW marks
Small (6") Combo Square Swanson..
Stanley No. 20 Bevel Gauge SW markings
Marking knife laying folded up in the tool well...and a sharp pencil..

A sharp 1/4" chisel to do the chopping with...and a mallet to drive it around..

Normal day in my shop...

Lid work..involve a mitersaw..
506226
And a sander to fine tune things..
506227
Also involved was the tablesaw...
506228
Both for running a rebate all around the inside of the lid's panel...to tilting the blade to 15 degrees to "raise" the panel....and also plough the grooves for the panel to sit in...

Then a glue up happened...flash mobbed by clamps?
506229
With a combo square to check that things are indeed square...

2 planes were in use, to fine tune the fit of the panel into the grooves...
506230

Collar parts also got a slight round-over from the block plane on the inside corner above where the panel slides in...did it BEFORE the glue-up happened..

Let this sit overnight...stay tuned..

Clamps came off today....plane was hard at work..
506231
Cleaning things up...then tried to match the box to the lid..
506232
As for that raised panel?
506233
Too fancy for a Pine Box?

Was checking for high spots..
506234
And any gaps...
506235
Was a busy day..
506236
Also, all outside corners got a round-over, via that block plane...

Maybe tomorrow, I can add the hardware?
Stay tuned...

Looking good. Should have it done before end of the month.

Hardware Installed..
506272
Hinges first....I also like to clamp the 2 parts together in the vise, whenever it can fit...keeps things from moving around..
506273
And a few tools, too..next, flip over, and install the latch..
506274
And make sure it works...
506275
Then add a couple handles, one on each end...
506276
Handles, on a small box? Well, easier to pick up what with the weight inside..
506277
I also needed a notch for the plane's handle to rest in...
506278
This plane USED to reside in another, larger box that it shared with 2 other planes....one was shipped out, and the #78 has it's own case.....the old Stanley #39 3/8" was just flopping around inside the old case....now, it is held in place a lot better.

Almost time for a PIP?

steven c newman
08-19-2023, 10:58 AM
Ok, PIP, before the Amber Shellac goes on, this afternoon?
506279
has one coat of Witch's Brew Stain..front view
506280
Corner view....
506281
Hinge side view..and raise the lid..
506282
Note: when I close the lid, it locks the plane in place...

A coat or 2 of shellac as a top coat, and call it good?

Stay tuned..

Will be posting as a Project later..but, for right now..
506338
Will see what the Test Audience says...
506339
Stanley No. 39 3/8" Dado plane's new home..
506340
fancy hinges..screws are "clocked" to look like an "X"
506341
Same for the screws in the handles

And the Latch..
506342
as for that smudge/ blotch on the lid..
506343
Was made by this..
506344
out on the end of this...
506345
Takes about 20 minutes to heat up...or, cool down..

That looks great! I love the "brand" Where does one get a branding iron like that one. I've seen the ones that are one oe two lines of text but not one thats all fancy.

google: "branding iron for woodworkers" -- they're available all over the place. I've got at least five different ones from multiple sources.

Actually, I sent them a photo of the design I wanted...they crafted it in brass...
@emilycraftsupplies

My son ordered from them. They make branding tools for both wood and leather. They offer both an Electric heated version (like mine) and a Flame heated version.

Usually I let it heat about 15 to 20 minutes, before trying to brand a piece of wood. It also takes that long for it to be cool enough to place back in the wooden case it came with.

Nice (and fast) work, Steven. I don’t believe in luck so I won’t wish you such for the cataract surgery. Instead, give ‘em hell!

Steven,

+1 on Tim's comment above.

The last photo with the Stanley 39 in it looks like you restored it a bit from the first photo. Do you use the 39 much?

I don't have a 39, and never felt the need to have one, but do have a 45 that I have had for over 40 years and have had a 46 for maybe 4 or 5 years or so perhaps. My 46 is still boxed up somewhere from our move to Oklahoma and I don't know when it will see the light of day again as I have no idea when I can get my shop built.

I know the 39 is a dedicated plane for one specific width, which makes me wonder if it works a lot better than the combination planes with various irons for different widths?

All I need for the 39 to cut a 3/8" wide dado..to to attach a batten along the right hand side of the dado...set the depth of cut..and go to town.....90 degrees to the grain or at any angle I need.

The 45 and 46 are more or less guided by the fence setting. The 39 can go anywhere across a panel...like a middle shelf in a 3 shelf bookcase...it can also clean up and fine tune dados made by the #45 or #46...since the right side of the plane is milled flat...
