Rehabs are done...last Yard sale buy was a Craftsman "Chrome Edge cross cut hand saw ($2) that was still factory sharp...cleaned off the bench of rehab stuff, time to make some saw dust..
504821
Tools to do joinery with...I do pins first, BTW...came time to chop out the waste...had a problem..
504822
That 3/4" plywood slab I do the chopping on..wasn't flat...so, fresh out of rehab...and put to work...
504823
Clamped to the slab, chop about halfway down on the outside face...flip over..
504824
and chop from the inside...

Used these pins, trace around them to lay out the tails....Bandsaw to remove all the waste, by cutting on the waste sides of the lines. The more of each line I leave, the tighter the joints will be...Dry fit?
504825
Needed a mallet to drive this home....repeat for the other corner..
504826

This is to become the back and the 2 sides for the box. Front will be 2 drawer fronts, and the front of a shallow tray under the lid. Box will sit on a solid wood base, that I need to glue up....so

Had a stack up 1 x 2s....cut to rough length. Resaw the blanks to ~5/8" thick...run the edges to also get them straight and parallel...then glue them into a panel..
504827
Used a double set of cauls to try to keep things close to flat..
504828

Let this sit a day or 2...then square the ends, and flatten both faces....

Will lay out the drawers next. Bottom drawer rides on the base, then a plywood floor for the other drawer to slide on...with an Ash front...there is a storage space above the second drawer...1/4" plywood floor let into the front panel...

Might be "fun" Drawer fronts @ 1/4" thickness, sides and backs 1/8"....

Stay tuned...

Now for the front of the box....needed several parts cut to length on the mitersaw..
504904
Seems to be working well enough, for a Cordless Tool...
504905
Had a couple knots to remove, and then square up the ends...note the reflection in the saw blade?

I used the back ox the box to get the lengths and widths just right..
504906
2 will be drawer fronts, 1 to be the front of a tray...and a narrow strip to hide the edge of a plywood drawer runner...

Then some grooves were laid out and milled..
504907
Top gets dovetailed to the sides of the box...and will need a rebate to house(hide?) the edge of the plywood floor..
504910
Narrow strip will get a notch to sit in...Plywood panels were cut to sizes needed...tested for fit..
504912
Not too bad, for Day #2?

Might sneak back to the shop, after supper? Depending how bored I get...we'll see
Stay tuned..

Day 3..and a glue up?
504940
Working on the front of the case..
504941
Making sure the panels line up...then a dry fit, once both front corners are done...Top view..
504942
And a view of the assemble front..
504943
Gave both plywood panels a good sanding...the a forest of clamps showed up...along with a brush and a bottle of glue..
504944
That diagonal clamp?
504945
Pull until square says it IS square....double check the rest of the corners..
504946
And that will be that, until the glue dries....
Will work on that panel for the base...and might try to get a lid built? Oh, and build 2 drawers...

That forest of clamps came off today...had to trim a drawer divider...
505043
As it was a bit too thick....filled a few square holes...
505044
See them? Also get the case to sit flat...top and bottom ( reason WHY I planed that plywood panel flat)
505045
No rocking allowed...

Base panel also came out of the clamps, today....used the Handy-Dandy Caul Removal Tool...
505046
One or 2 whacks, caul pops right off...trimmed the panel for square, and got it flat on both faces...then glued it to the case..
505047
That base panel is made of 6 strips...not too worried about any cross grain problems...
505050
I also rough cut 2 drawer backs..
505048
And the 4 sides for the 2 drawers..
505049
And that was it, for Day #4....was getting a might too warm...

Stay tuned...

I'm following along on this build. It sort of looks like an old tool chest that I once had, picked it up for a few bucks at an estate sale. Two drawers and a large till at the top. A precursor to the machinist's chests of later years. It fit perfectly in the back well of my old VW bug.

Mine was stolen along with all of the tools and hardware it had in it back when I worked in theater doing set work. One day I will build one to fill the hole its theft left.

Enjoy the build, I am!

Back to actual wood working....
Case and base came out of the clamps a bit ago..back of the case..
505075
Cleaned up, back of the base is flush with the back of the case..
505076
Ends were trimmed flush, and cleaned up....
505077
Drawer Fronts were sized to a snug fit...
505078
2 pluwood panels for the drawer bottom were cut to size, and..
505079
Drawer Sides and their backs were also cut to fit....

Joinery will be later....

Stay tuned...

Took longer to process these photos, than to do the actual work....45 minutes IN the shop...this afternoon...still too bleeding hot..but..
505123
Front needed a rebate for the bottom to sit in...test fit..
505124
Rebate...and the rest of the parts...rebates on the ends of the front, to house the sides...back is just a Butt Joint..Dry fit..
505125
Other than glue and the rebates...just a simple little drawer...glued up..
505126
View of the back of the drawer...
505127
Takes a few clamps, to glue 5 pieces up...let this sit a spell..
505128
Went ahead and milled the parts for the "Top" drawer,,,,while waiting on those clamps from the Bottom drawer...
505129
Maybe Sunday I can get this one glued up?

Stay tuned...

Hmmm, Build alongs...been doing that here for a few years...

So, after the Road Trip to Lost Art Press, yesterday....I removed that drawer from the clamps....squared it up a bit...and did a test fit.....Hmmmm...1/8" gap on both ends? We have ways..

The 3 pieces for the panel for the lid were also made ready to be glued up, last night...

So, this morning, I cut filler strips from thin Ash scarps...and glued those to the sides of the drawer...
505250
this is the back of the drawer. The front edges of the case are also End Grain....and I will be trying to match things up with the front of the drawer. With a "Piston Fit" and a bit of wax...those wide gaps will soon disappear...I hope.

The panel for the lid also came out of it's clamps for about an hour, or so.....as I sanded the panel flat and smooth...and squared things up....also had 2 strips to mill up into Bread Board ends....and milled a Tongue & Groove joint....sand paper to fine tune the fits..and back into the clamp it went..
505251
With any sort of luck..the front and the 2 ends will have the same over-hanging Lip...am now trying to decide on what style of handle to place on the front of each drawer..
505257
Stay tuned..

Sunday evening...shop had cooled down a bit...got the clamps of the first drawer, milled the width to final fit...then glued up the other drawer..
505300
I just might have to buy a few more of these Spring Clamps....if'n I will be doing a lot of these tiny stuff...Tomorrow morning, I will be adding strips to the sides of this second drawer..
Panel for the lid was also out of the clamps...cleaned things up a bit..
505301
Had a couple high spots to level out....I also cut a radius on the front corners...
505302
Used a washer to drawer the radius....

Needed tools to install the hinges for the lid...
505303
Goodell Pratt drill with a 1/16" drill bit for the pilot holes..
505304
So...First drawer seems to fit the opening a lot better..
505305
And the lid works!
505306
Will have to see IF I still have enough black chain left over...

Debate is now about adding any "feet" to the bottom of the box....Hmmm, we'll see....I might have just enough Green Felt to line the spaces...could do that while the add-a-sides are curing on the Top Drawer...

Stay tuned...

PIP? Still needs a final sanding here and there...felt needs glued inside but..
505324
At least the lid shuts...
505325
Hinges look good?
505326
Opened up...like the lid brace....ok, close it back up..
505327
Square is for scale. Need to finesse around the latch a bit...

Decided to add some feet, needed the Mitre Box & Saw..
505328
Then the bandsaw ( this IS a Hybrid Shop) to do the fancy end cuts...
505329
Rough cuts.....sanded these and added a dab of glue..
505330
Moosh around until each parts "sticks" in place...allow to dry until this evening, final sand the feet see IF it sits level.

Might also install the felt liners today....either before of after the Witch's Brew goes on?

Stay tuned...

Lay out tools....since most are scattered through out the shop...Dividers, compasses, that sort of thing...

Might try the shop again, today...and see what I can get done? We'll see...

PIP #2 in the same day?

Front View..with a coat of Witch's Brew..
505333
Open the lid...
505334
Open the top drawer...
505335
Added a divider to the bottom drawer..
505336
Feet have been level, so that the case does NOT rock..
505337

Still look for the small chain for the lid...waiting on the Witch's Brew to dry....then maybe a coat of Amber Shellac, or...Clear Gloss Poly..

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-01-2023, 10:27 PM
There be a coat of Amber Shellac on the little chest....and the drawers and compartment are filling up with tools...will take a few photos tomorrow, after I buff out the finish...
Stay tuned..

Yeah..same old BS with the photos..each and every MONTH...then I have to go back and edit the SAME photos, using the same exact size as before...THEN they will show up....

Getting VERY TIRESOME and THIS is the ONLY site that does this BS....no matter how many times I complain about it...

I can see them now. Looks very nice. Whats the next project? The special project you gave me is coming along. Hope to be done by end of the week.
