Can anyone help me identify this wood? The first 5 pictures are from one piece, and the last 4 are another.

Is it light or heavy?
Hard or soft?
Does it have an aroma?
Looks alone can be deceiving, more information will return a more accurate answer.

The first sample feels heavy, much heavier than the second. I guess I'd say it feels hard, but I'm new to woodworking. I don't recall a specific smell.
The second I'm starting to think it's pine or fir.

Based on the knots I'd say a conifer of some type.

For both, or just the second piece?

My guess is Aspen or Poplar for the first, Yellow pine for the second.

I figured pine or similar for the second.
Is it pretty easy to say for sure that the first is a hardwood?

Very hard to tell indeed. Even willow has some similar look to it.
Maybe take a look over at the wood Ddatbase with some of the suggestions offered.
