I picked up a copy of the current WOOD magazine with jointer comparison for FREE at Grizzly today!

No that's not quite the gloating part...

After a fierce internal debate in the Grizzly showroom, I plunked down the money for their discounted showroom model of the discontinued 8" Ultimate series jointer. It is the one with cast iron base, like the larger 12" and 16" models. 900 lbs total weight with 4" cutterhead (hard to find on smaller jointers) and index pin to lock at top dead center for knife changes. Nice hefty fence too - seemed rigid and easy to adjust from 10 minutes of touchy feely (get your mind out of the gutter!). It isn't the spiral cutterhead version that the pic below is labeled as, but the 3-knife version that I wanted for edging without ridges. The plan is to mount a feeder to the back side and leave it set up for edging all the time.

I came close to spending half as much on a similar current model, but this one seemed really sweet. So is it a gloat or not? Well at least the magazine was free...

The one minor annoyance I have is that the handle on the fence tends to get in the way with edge jointing. If you're using a power feeder I guess that won't be an issue.

Ah, didn't think of that. Does it unscrew?
