We have a new can of ant spray that's environmentally friendly. Apparently you have to drown the ants individually.

Diatomaceous earth is environmentally friendly and it kills ants by piercing their exoskeleton. It causes them to die of dehydration. It can take up to 48 hours.

You may want to wear breathing protection when using dry diatomaceous earth.

Sprays, regardless of their type are kinda a spot solution. The best overall ant control are the types that the ants carry back to the nest and in turn either kill the queen or render the queen unable to reproduce. (the same is true for termites)

I have used some of this brand. It seems to work but it leaves a kind of greasy film that you eventually will want to clean up.

Ammonia works well for spot treatments. For "take back to the queen" stuff, I use Amdro (https://www.amazon.com/Amdro-100511025-Yard-Treatment-Pound/dp/B00FN3GOX6/).

Best method I have found for ants is to limit their rewards. I have 2 kids that leave them lots of food so they keep coming back. Keep the area exceptionally free of food/water and they should leave

If thats not working use the baits they take back and poison the whole colony and use the DE where they were entering to prevent them from trying again later

Terro or borax mixed with sugar water will take care of most of them.

Killing inside the house, or before they get in?

A lot of environmentally friendly replacements for chemicals that might be harmful don't work worth a darn.

When we first moved to our little house in the woods 43 years ago, we had a big problem with ticks. My Wife tried all sorts of natural things, and nothing cut down on the ticks. She finally said she gave up. I asked her what she wanted me to do. She said, "Nuke 'em." We haven't had a tick problem since.

That's what we use - the borax version and you will often see it in the commercial products.

Baking soda and sugar will also kill ants and isn't toxic to people or animals.
