Starting up...thought I work on the doors, first...that way, I can size the ends and the sides better...
497613
These 4 boards will be the 2 doors...once they get glued up...getting them there will be the fun part..

497614
These 2 will be the ends...( one was scrapped, too wavy and thin)and this one..
497615
Will get ripped right down the middle, to give me a pair of sides...

At least that is the plan.
Jointed a couple edges, first..
497616
Wanted a straight edge, before I cross cut for length..then fine tune the glue joint..and glue up Door #1
497617
Repeat, and glue up #2.
497618
Then stash them both out of the way...
497619
While I work on the other parts....and wait on the washer to get done..
497620
As I have Laundry Detail, today.....
Stay tuned...

Kept trying to get one board flat...was too wavy, and all I got done was make it too thin...so...
497621
Set the rip fence to the thickness I need the new part to be..
Then the Cardio Workout could begin..
497622
And then the results..
497623
Need the board on the left, for right now...needs to match "existing"
497624
Then cut out the worst parts, trying to match that other end piece...

Cleaned up an edge or 2..
497625
Then flatten the saw marks...as the plank wasn't quite flat...
497626
A little too thick on the left edge...we have ways...
497627

just about done..

Waiting on the doors...need to size the box to the doors...then decide on the corner joints...and whether to add a bread board edge to the doors, and whether to add a shelf inside...maybe 2?

Stay tuned...

Have removed most of the clamps from the 2 doors..
497694
So they will stay flat..while I lay out the half lap...
497695
Something like this? then, I can start to trim these down to size..
497696
2 sides, and 2 ends...and lay out the dados for a shelf or 2?

Stay tuned..

Made a run to the Hobby Lobby today...almost $20 in little baggies of hardware and wooden parts...

Afraid I wiped out a few items, in the process...hinges..latches...that sort of thing....hopefully they will re-order....if not, there is always the online store...

steven c newman
03-15-2023, 11:46 PM
$19 and change..hmm..
497781
Spread out a bit..9 bags of goodies..
497782
Some are 2 bags....like the small hinges..
497783
With scalloped edges...
497784
2 bags of these swing arm latches...and,,
497785
S bags of these regular latches...
Wooden drawer pulls?
497786
And of course, the Mini Shaker Pegs.
497787
Might use these hinges for some doors?
497788
Maybe?

I did set up a few things for the shop tomorrow....stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-16-2023, 12:58 PM
Start time 1100 hrs,,,,end time (for now) 1200 hrs...time out for Lunch...
4 squared..
497803
Stack them up, use the same edge to cut the ends square...flip over, repeat,
497804
Had some bread board end blanks to process...had to match the grain up on the door panels..
497805
Milled tongues on all the panels ends...then set up to mill the grooves
497806
That be Door #1 sitting there in the clamps..
497807
And door #2...letting these two sit a spell...thinking that this evening, I might mill the lap joint, after cleaning up the latest glue ups...

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
03-16-2023, 8:11 PM
6 hours IN the clamps...then clean them up, trim the excess off..and see about that lap joint..

497815
Had to make sure the grain lines up..
497816
Before I cut these...and double checked that I was on the correct edge...Will run the router plane around, tomorrow...

497817
Now I can cut these 4 to length...
497818
Will start on the 1/4" x 1/4" finger joints tomorrow, I hope...
497819
Don't stare at it too long...you might see things that ain't there...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman

Day one of finger joints..Lay out tools...
497859
The 1/4" Witherby chisel is to set the spacing..
497860
I work my way in from both edges, and even out at the center...Handsaw?
497861
According to the logo on the spline..this is a Jackson Backsaw..results...
497862
Rub a candle along just above the teeth, helps out...Chop out the waste
497863
Then, trace around the fingers..
497864
Mark the waste with an "X" of some sort...saw and chop out the waste...dry fit #1
497865
then repeat all of the above..until..
497866
Dry fit #2 corner...only 2 more to go..

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-18-2023, 1:12 PM
Corner #3 has been dry fitted, this morning..
497895
Then, went ahead and made Corner #4...dry fitted all four corners, too...
497896

Next up...will be a few dados...
497897
To house a pair of shelves...then see about making a back panel...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-18-2023, 8:38 PM
First, do a bit of math..
497934
11-1/4"..Divide by 3 = ~3-3/4"...a divider to step that measurement off...
497935
Center the 2 shelves on those marks...mark a layout line with a square..
497936

These are to be stopped dados....need a 1/4" chisel and a 1" chisel to chop out most of the waste...
497937
And a router plane to level things out...hopefully just deep enough...and then a few dry fits..
497938
1 done 3 to go...then a full dry fit was attempted...it showed that either the shelves were a 1/16" too long, or the dados weren't deep enough....easier to nip a bit of the shelves..try again..
497939
tested out some clamps, too...no glue yet...THAT will require a good night's sleep, BEFORE I start to spread any glue around...
497940
Have set aside one clamp to pull things into square...may need it....Could use a few extra hands to help out...

Stay tuned..there is sure to be either Beer..or cussing involved...maybe both...

Steven,

I am enjoying the build.

Your glue-ups with your usual forest of clamps always is impressive, as I seem to have a battle with several less clamps when doing a much simpler glue-up. My glue-ups are only for things like gluing a strip of solid pine on the edge of plywood to hide the end grain of the plywood laminations where it shows. This for the shelves I built a few months ago for the shelves in the wife's pantry that I built.

At any rate, the build, as always is followed with interest.

Thanks and regards,

Stew

Needed a nice wide, flat assembly table...
498011
But, this will work...clamps were laid out..
498012
Some within an arm's reach, some were a 2 step sort of thing..
498013
A mallet and a brush for the glue at the ready..
498014
Carried this over to the table...
498015
Knock it apart, set the parts down in the order they will get glued...corners 3 and 4 needed the mallet, even with the glue..they went first, along with the shelves, as the lower shelf also needed a mallet..the corners 1 and 2 were added to the mass of gooey parts...then the clamps did their flash mob thing...
498016
Somehow manage to get a square in there...
498017
Was about 1/8" out...
498018
Well, pull until it is square..

Will let this sit a day....while I enjoy a wee nip of Conway's Irish Ale.....

Stay tuned..

OK, box came out of the clamps, this morning..
498058
Checking to see how well the doors fit..
498059
Next would be to cut a panel to be the back of the box..
498060
Cutting gauge to get a line ready to saw.
498061
Then repeat for an end...
498062
Then, spread some glue with a brush...and let the clamps go at it..
498063
Will let this sit a spell...tomorrow, maybe...I can clean this up..and work on both the hinges and a stand ...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-21-2023, 9:25 PM
Box is out of the clamps..last of the clean up has been done..
498093
Checking for square ..and..leveling a corner or two that needed it..
498094
Started to lay out the hinges..
498095
Decided to work on a stand, instead...had a few leftovers..
498096
Worked out a pattern...
498097
Needed a base, for the 2 legs...strip of Pine..
498098
Glue the 3 parts together..
498099
Right foot is in the air, because the foot behind it is sitting on a square..

Waiting overnight on the glue-up...clean up tomorrow....might install the hinges first?

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-22-2023, 5:11 PM
Base is out of the clamps...glue joints cleaned up...base has been squared up enough to do a dry fit..
498139
well, it is able to support the case...without falling over..method of attachment...
498140
3 counter sunk 3/4" screws..and a bit of glue...I also off-set the case to the stand..
498141
To be under the doors, too..

Set this aside for now..and start on the doors..rebates were in need of a bit of leveling..
498142
Both doors. had a few high spots to level out...

Then plane the ends until they are flush with the top of the case...and sit on the offset equally across the front..was a bit of plane, test fit, plane a bit more, test fit again..etc..

needed to get this done, BEFORE I start to lay out for hinges...

Stay tuned..

Hinges? Hinges? Ok, laid out for the hinge for the door..
498149
2 hinges per door..got out a few tools to install these...
498150
Knife and a square to knife the lines...wide chisel for along the back of the mortise..narrow chisel to chop a bit of waste...Router plane to level to depth..
498151
Pilot hole drill and a small screwdriver to install the 3 screws per leaf...a bit of candle wax on the threads does help...
498152
Fold up out of the way, do the next hinge the same way...then lay the door over onto the case..
498153

This evening, walked down to the shop, and install this door to the case...drilled 6 pilot holes...all without me glasses on my nose....also laid out for tomorrow's 2 hinge install...

Stay tuned..( BTW, the door works fine..amazing...)

03-23-2023, 10:21 AM
Thought I had door#2's hinges laid out correctly..
498168
Decided to double check, BEFORE any chisel or knife work...
498169
Hazards of being in a hurry...wrong face..good thing it was only lines from a pencil..

BTW, Door #1?
498170
Was installed last night...then stood up on it's own 4 feet....
498171
Then closed to see how it works...
498172

A handle?
498173
Centered on each door? Latch centered between them?
498174

Thinking of beveling the edges of the doors...
Top of the case does look a bit...plain? We'll see...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-23-2023, 7:13 PM
Ok..up date..Hinges have been installed on the doors...and now both doors are hung..
498226
Had to add tenons to the knobs...
498227
Install the knobs and the latch..
498228
Then used a plane to bevel the edges of the doors a bit..
498229
Coming around that corner was a but tricky...
498230

Tomorrow, I'll sand this thing down to 220 grit, and then see about a finish...

Stay tuned..

If it were me I'd put two stretchers in the base, so I just wonder whether it's rigid as is? Also, you went with finger joints, do you think you'd save any time doing a box joint? The difference is a "finger" width, a box joint would have had just 3 or 4 "fingers".

steven c newman
03-24-2023, 5:29 PM
Something like this?
498280
With one in the center?
498281

New can!
498282
The "Before" ( just Witch's Brew)
498283
And the After..
498284

These are Boxes #1 and #2...now have a coat of Amber Shellac...have learned long ago, to leave the lids slightly opened....

Debate now is whether to just Shellac the #3 box....or brush on a coat of Witch's Brew first...

Waiting on some glue to dry...stay tuned...

Yup, something like this. I was thinking rather a batten and nicely dressed thought tenons, but it this box to be seen from a side your way looks better. Reminds me gingerbread clocks a bit.

Nice build, keep it up! I enjoy following these too.

steven c newman

To put a coat of Amber Shellac on this Project....one needs a Proper Can Opener...
498321
Ok..1st coat is on...I did the inside first...
498322
Lighter shade is do to glare....then the sides..
498323
Note that the front leg sticks out a bit to the front? Yet the back is vertical...."Best foot forward"?
Then I did the rest of the outside...
498324

A couple visitors...to try out the new home...
498325

Waiting a while, before the next couple of coats...to see how this looks....

steven c newman
03-25-2023, 9:30 PM
Been hand sanded to 320 grit....wiped down...and a second coat of Amber Shellac has been brushed on...try again tomorrow, for the 3rd coat...

Stay tuned...

Sitting in it's new home, ready to go to work...
498635
Be careful when you open a door...
498636
Things could get...messy...

Steven,

I appreciate the detail on how you can get all the clamps on and the project squared up before the glue can set up. Good post.

Thanks and regards,

Stew

Steven,

Nice project, and it turned out nicely. I have never used amber shellac, but it looks good on the project, and it brings out the grain nicely. It sets nicely there by its new home by the toaster.

Good job,

Stew
