Greetings all
I recently posted two pictures of my first turning of the new year, a hollow form from Norway maple, with some pretty nice quilting. Chip responded, and in his response he asked me if I happened to have a picture of the wood before I turned it. I did not have a picture at the time, but I had a piece of the buttress left over, sitting in the shop in case I can think of something small to do with it. So, sorry for the delay Chip, but here it is in all its wild roughness.

This is the outside of the tree, right where it comes out of the ground. When you see ripples like this on the outside, you can be pretty sure that it is pretty on the inside. This is fairly extreme, but often if you look closely at some species, you can see ripples even in the bark. In just about any species you will see these ripples in the trunk just under a branch. This is one of the things to look for.
For anyone reading this and not remembering or not seeing the piece I posted, this is what it looks like on the inside. :D

Chip, I hope this helps you out some, and if I come across some more figured stuff in the rough and the camera is handy, I will be glad to take a few more pictures for you.
