Out of 3 boxes made from Leftovers...had to clear off the bench, put a few toys away..lay out the part selections for the next box..
497187
Even had a choice of lids..
497188
There was one issue...
497189
Neither were wide enough....had to re-cut the 2 ends...and trim the bottom panel for width..
497190
We have ways.

Lay out toys...
497191
Still working on getting the NEW cutting gauge sharpened..
497192
Yeah..working progress...
Lay out the waste areas with a "x"
497193
Stay tuned...more to come...

Time to get out a "different " saw...
497194
Geo. H. Bishop No. 10 saw...says so right in the etch...
497195
Then, set up a chopping block, and a clamp...sit the piece good face up
497196
Chop about half way down..then flip over..

497197
And complete the pins...use these to lay out the tails..
497198
Simply trace around the pins. I then use the bandsaw, to saw on the waste sides of the lines..LEAVING the lines...
Then chop out as before with the pins...then try a dry fit..
497199
Had areas in the pins, that needed pared...

Back was getting a bit sore...busy day ( besides carrying that Nichols & Stone rocking chair back upstairs)
Rather than continue on..decided to call it..Quitting Time!
497200
Will try again, tomorrow

Stay tuned!

Steven, what are you using for a marking knife, is it that utility knife on one of the photos?

I use the cutting gauge first, then deepen with the knife....since the line is already cut with the gauge.

497274

497275
Bandsaw did this 3 times...a few dry fits along the way...
497276

Out of the clamps, this morning...time to clean up the glue joints..
497368
Make sure things are square..
497369
level the top and bottom edges..
497370
Junior Jack...checked for any high spots...
497371
And get ready to glue the panel to the bottom of the box
497372
Done...
497373
Now have to wait on the glue to dry a day....
497374
Maybe after a while, I might start to build a lid for this?

Something tears your baseline and it shows like a fat glue line. Probably the knife, this type just doesn't hold a sharp point for whatever reason. At some point I have switched to a pencil type utility knife, Olfa or Husky work equally well. Their benefit is a super sharp snapping blade, getting a new tip is a 15s operation - there's a breaking slot in a cap. They also have different blade types (Husky and Olfa are interchangeable), so you could get a 30˚ blade, it's pointy and it cuts that ponderosa pine very well.

The wood happens to be Ash, BTW...

I prefer the Stanley Utility knives, and their blades...as I have other chores for it to do...

Have a few of them snap-o-blade knives...never really liked them....
497378
Yep...Ash. Saw cuts stop just short of the baseline..

Will go back to the shop in a little bit...and see how the latest glue up turned out....

Might trim the bottom panel with a block plane?

We'll see....

497426
Side one needs a hair planed off..side 2?
497427
Will need a bit more..
497428
Ends don't look too bad...
497429
Side one is done...side 2?
497430
Took a few more passes...
Bottom also needed flattened a bit..
497431
Nope, not Pine of any sort..
497432
Ash, yes...

Needed to start on a lid, next...stay tuned..

03-10-2023, 8:24 PM
Ok..1/2" thick lid....should be ok...needed trimmed for width, though..
497433
Millers Falls No. 11, type 2....make a few passes, check for width..
497434
I don't think Pine makes shavings like this....
497435
need to mark this for length..and cut off the excess..tomorrow...

Stay tuned..

03-11-2023, 11:35 AM
Will trim the lid for length....may do a bevel around the top edges, and may continue it down the corners...Might try something different with this lid...

And start laying out parts for Box #3....also out of Ash.

Stay tuned...

Lid panel trimmed to length...the ripped a couple strips of scrap Ash....and got the Mitersaw working...
497466
Cordless one, of course...then some dry fits..
497467
Before the first clamps were used...
497468
Then work my way around...did both ends first. then one side..
497469
Until the final side could be fitted and glued..
497470
Those 2 Harbor Freight F style clamps are to pull in the sides, until flush with the sides of the lid panel...

Let this sit a spell,,,stay tuned..

03-12-2023, 5:19 PM
Installing the lid...means hinges need to get placed..
497549
And then a fancy latch...
497550
Simple tools...
497551
That white object is an old candle....helps the screw's threads in this hard Ash..

A plane then came out..
497552
All corners got a bevel...then everything was sanded to 220 grit, for now..
497553
Bit of a "PIP"...
497554
Set this aside, along with Box #1...
497555

While I lay out parts for Box #3..
497556

Last of the resawn Ash Stash....
Stay tuned..
