That time, again....time to clean up the mess left by the last Project....
496295
Dispose of the scraps I can no longer make use of...
496296
Sort through the stacks of Leftovers....
496297
and see what I can find that might be of use....like these?
496298
Others needed resawn to remove a lot of nasty things, like 1 x 6 KNOTS, or one face that was nothing but bark...
496299
All that is left of a nasty 1 x 6 x 5' plank...others just needed a trim?
496300
Just run a saw kerf all the way around...leave the decent part..cut away the junk..may have to get down one of these?
496301
Thinking the one on the right will work a bit better...

We'll see what we have Leftover....might be a Project of some sort?
Stay tuned...

There is still a 1 x 6 x 6' plank upstairs....trying to decide WHAT to do with it...
From the good end..
496330
Lumber is supposed to be Ash..next section?
496331
and the 3rd section..
496332
And the other end....?
496333
and a look at the other face near this spot...
496334
Not sure how much would be of use...yet...$0.80 a Bft...is what I paid...

Cleaned off the bench..got a saw at the ready
496361
Had the board a tad high in the vise..
496362
That's a bit better,,,saw down half way, turn the board end for end..
496363
first one done...NEXT!
496364
Have to be careful..as it is hard to tell when you'll meet the other cut..
496365
Ooops..got 3 out of the 5 boards done, before I ran out of "Get up & Go"
496366
Made a mess, too..decided to try and clean up that first board..
496367
Plane was sold by Van Camp, no less..
496368
Yep...there is an 8 inside that "D"...saw is a 28", 5-1/2 ppi filed Rip...with a thumbhole handle....cost me $1 at an Estate Sale a few years back...

Stay tuned...

Tis a Monday,,,lots of rain in the area, tornadoes to the south of here...Kind of sore, at the moment....more of a case of Uncle Arthur (itis) not liking this sort of weather, than anything else.

The way things have been going, today....I don't think there will be any shoptime, tonight.

Unless it is to process that last plank? Just to see what I can "salvage" out of it....too wet outside to get the Fire Pit started up..anyway.

Depending on what comes out of all that resaw work...maybe a fancy box or 2? Choice of corner joints?

Right now...the "save able" boards are around 3/8" to 1/2" thick....Box joints, or Dovetails?....might even try my luck cutting the lids off....?

Stay tuned...

Cut, sorted, resaw...and this is all I could save from the nast 1 x 6 x 6' plank...
496434
The rest?
496435
Thickness?
496436
About 1/2" thick...by 2-1/2" wide....
496437
Not the prettiest ones...but way better than the rest of that plank, there was also a piece from the resaw/plane work Sunday..
496438
Might find some use for these?

Since Tuesday has arrived with the wind..time for a bit of Cardio?
496459
Had a few more to do...then the clean-ups...
496460
Added a "Plane Stop" for some..
496461
Others just needed Old Heft & Hubris..
496462
To get these 2 smooth and flat..
496463
Busy Morning?
496464
Along with all the saw dust...the rest of today's "output"?
496465

So..now I am sitting here, having a bit of Lunch...
Stay tuned..

Results of all of this, besides a messy floor?
496586
I now have 3 pieces for lids..
496587
A stash (2 actually) of ends and sides...
496588
and..
496589
That I can lay out for the first of 3 box builds..
496590
Once I clear the deck for action...
496591
And figure out how to join the corners....through dovetails, or , Box joints by hand..Hmm?

steven c newman
03-02-2023, 6:34 PM
Laying out.
496720
Was not to happy with it..
496721
Figured I could change it a bit...was not happy with the No. 68 Dovetail saw, either..
496722
Disston No. 4 seemed to work better...
496723
Chopping out from the outside "Show" face..then flip over and finish things up..
496724
Used these pins to lay out the matching tails...needle sharp No.2 Pencil works just fine....saw on the waste side of the lines...chop out the waste..dry fit a few times until..
496725
Still need a mallet to fully seat the tails...will do for now..

Tried "Tails First"...did not go quite as well...
496726
5 or 6 dry fits to get this far? Not up to my (Very Low) Standards...will do the other 2 corners as Pins First...
496727
Maybe because I am just used to doing it that way...

Stay tuned..

Friday's session..before the Dungeon Creek started to rise...
496794
Tools..
496795
2 SWs and a Bakelite...
496796
Today's selection of chisels..
496797
The Jackson on top..keeps binding up about the 3rd stroke...the No. 4 just motors along...
496798
mark a gauge line, darken with a pencil...
496799
Small combo square to carry line down from the edge...
Dry fit for corner #3...pins first..
496800
Yes, that about all the space I have to work in...got the 4th corner done...dry fit all 4..
496801
Trying to see how the clamps will work, during a glue up....once things dry out a bit....

We also have a roof leak going on..and the Boss is NOT a happy camper about it...
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
03-04-2023, 1:53 PM
This morning..lay out..
496881
Grab a brush from the bag..
496882
Mallet at the ready? A few clamps AND cauls...and an Anti-bow Device to keep the sides from bowing in...
496883
Checking the insides for square..
496884
Should be close enough...
496885
Clamp #8 went on right after this shot...

Letting this sit a day..
Stay tuned....

steven c newman

Figured the glue had had enough time to dry....so..
removed the clamps...clean up the sides..
496914
Then, clean up and square the ends to the sides..
496915
Trim a panel to match the bottom of the box...
496916
And glue it in place...
496917
Let no gap go unclamped!....

Tomorrow, I can remove this Flash Mob....clean things up, and start on a lid, of some sort..
Stay tuned..

Two thoughts:

I’m pretty happy if I make one thing a month. You seem to be on a one-per-week pace. That’s hard to keep up with!

I bet some of those scraps are big enough to use, are you sure you want to throw them out?

steven c newman
03-04-2023, 8:22 PM
Just keeping me out of the taverns, is all....most of those "scraps" are barely good enough for the Fire Pit...
Thanks for looking in!

Unclamped, this morning...
496944
Seems to be a bit hung-over?
496945
And, will need to shoot some end grain..
496946
Might just have the plane for that..
496947
Seems to work, too...
496948
As for that hung-over edge...
496949
Size the plane to the work being done. The bottom of the box?
496950
"We can...cooperate, I say, I say..."

Stay tuned..I went to work on the lid, too...

steven c newman

Lid work...needed a few parts..
496979
The Lid itself needed trimmed to match the box....the 1/4" thick piece needed a few strips ripped...
Needed to shed a bit of light, to better see what I was cutting...
496980
Over on the Stanley No. 358 Mitre box...
496981
What is nice, that most of the cutoffs would just hop over to this..
496982

Ok..Dry Fit times...
496983
Sand to adjust for length..
When things look close enough (will trim after this), a glue up happened,,,smaller clamps this time around..
496984
A bit of squeeze out, can be cleaned up, later....
Parts is parts...
496985
Even when a plane does a Photo-Bombing...

Shop is Normally Closed on Mondays....
Stay tuned...

Lid is out of the clamps, and is being fitted to the box...
497066
Have bought new Pilot hole drill bits..decided to try another Drill this time...
497067
Left: Stanley Defiance...Right: Goodell Pratt Co. The GP has too large of a drill bit...will give the 1/16" bits to the Defiance drill..
497068
pencil is for scale....

Before I add the hardware..one last step..
497069
As for that plastic box?
497070
That be my Hardware Supply Store...
Monday..meh..other than oiling up the drill, and taking a few photos...shop was closed today...

I see all the dilettantes still believe that every belt sander on the planet is loaded with fresh 40 grit and removes a fat sixteenth with every pass.

This place has become idjit central.

What? What? What? IF you were trying to be funny...it didn't work...Other than report this to the Mods.

What a Dumba....

There is also the parts laid out for the next box....of the 3 I plan to build to use up most of the leftovers....and make room for some new lumber, later this month...
497081
Bottom panel is a bit thinner, there is enough for 2 sides and 2 ends, and a panel for the lid.....all resaw from leftovers...

BTW..this is a LONG way from the mythical 40 grit...
497082
nor, is this ...
497083
Anywhere near "40Grit".....learn to read....

Ok....somebody caught me on a Bad Attitude Monday....

Tuesday, intend to sand the box to 220 grit, then install the hinges and a latch. Then decide on a finish...may just wait on all 3 boxes to get done...

Stay tuned...

Tuesday...had hardware to install, so I could clear the bench for the other Rebuild Project...
Laid out for hinges...
497121
Drill was going so fast, it tended to punch right on through...
497122
Those Brass screws were too big for the hinges...we have others...this gives an idea how tiny these screws are..
497123
Added a latch around in front...Waiting to decide on a finish...
497124
Stay tuned...

Will start a new thread, about Box #2....out of 3 boxes from the Leftovers.
Thanks for looking in...you too, Charles...
