View Full Version : Interesting measuring rule...a mini review, as it were

Someone on the TDPRI guitar focused forum recently posted within a thread about an interesting "flat but roll up" rule that he had acquired. I found the idea intriguing and bought one. The brand is BMI and I was able to buy off Amazon...it shipped free from the UK and only took about a week to arrive.

What's nice about this device is that it bridges the qualities of a flat rule with a tape measure. There's no hook end and unlike a typical tape measure, when you pull the rule out...it stays flat. But unlike a long steel rule (this thing is 2 meters long), it stores in a very small space. As you can see from the photos, I opted for the dual scale since that best fits how I work in the shop. I'm primarily metric at this point, but there are times when I need to swing the other way. :) So almost all my measuring devices are dual scale for convenience. This thing is smooth to operate and it really does lay out flat. At $18, it's also very reasonably priced. (link down below for Amazon if you are interested) I feel this is a nice addition to the mix...there are lots of times when the stiffer steel rules are the better choice, but I can see this being handy in the shop from time to time as well as providing a compact and portable "long, accurate" rule that could be handy for outside the shop including for install work where a rule instead of a tape measure is desired.

What a great idea, Jim.

I'm a great fan of a tape in a can - I have a number of Veritas tapes without a hook - but lying flat would definitely be a great help.

Thanks for posting the Amazon link (Amazon.ca for me, though)

That’s pretty cool, might have to order one and try it out. I recently got the Fastcap flat tape and I really like using that for dimensioning sheet goods.

Wife has a 3' one in her pocket book. I got it from Lufkin ( now Apex Tool Group) when I was teaching school. Hadn't seen another since.

Edward, my primary tape is the dual scale Fastcap. This device is not a tape measure...it's literally a flat rule that rolls up into a compact coil when not in use.

I have the Fastcap flat tape measure. Takes getting used to as there is no stickout as with one with a concave surface. FASTCAP LLC PS-FLAT16 ProCarpenter Flatback Tape Measure

Hey, anybody make a left handed tape measure, one that you hook on the right end of the wood , hold the measure with your left hand so you can use your right hand to mark the spot with a pencil? Without having to read the numbers upside down.

Pretty sure that Fastcap makes one.

I use the Fastcap flat rulers too. They are great for woodworking.

Jim, you have good taste :)

BMI also make the Festool tape measure. Mine are both 3m …

I like my tape measures to be either metric or combined metric-imperial …

I’ve been using these for several years as they are small, light, and perfectly accurate. The Festool has the ability to measure inside walls as well (with a rear, pull out section). Recently I added a similar tape measure with this feature, a 3m Hultafors.

This is possibly the best tape measure being made.

I didn't know that BMI was the OEM for the Festool tape. I will say that I like the quality of the flat rule for sure and it will certainly get use, especially with those "in between" spaces where one steel rule is too short and the next one in the series is too long. 'Kinda the three bears thing. :)
