Someone on the TDPRI guitar focused forum recently posted within a thread about an interesting "flat but roll up" rule that he had acquired. I found the idea intriguing and bought one. The brand is BMI and I was able to buy off Amazon...it shipped free from the UK and only took about a week to arrive.
What's nice about this device is that it bridges the qualities of a flat rule with a tape measure. There's no hook end and unlike a typical tape measure, when you pull the rule out...it stays flat. But unlike a long steel rule (this thing is 2 meters long), it stores in a very small space. As you can see from the photos, I opted for the dual scale since that best fits how I work in the shop. I'm primarily metric at this point, but there are times when I need to swing the other way. :) So almost all my measuring devices are dual scale for convenience. This thing is smooth to operate and it really does lay out flat. At $18, it's also very reasonably priced. (link down below for Amazon if you are interested) I feel this is a nice addition to the mix...there are lots of times when the stiffer steel rules are the better choice, but I can see this being handy in the shop from time to time as well as providing a compact and portable "long, accurate" rule that could be handy for outside the shop including for install work where a rule instead of a tape measure is desired.
