I needed 1 pc of walnut to help me complete a project. $13.50/bd ft. Not sure if this is good or bad based on current prices. Guys at the place did tell me they are seeing a shortage on Poplar of all things? Supplier is telling them they haven't been able to go into the forest to harvest because it has been too warm and they don't want to tear up the ground? I think there is a lot of price manipulation by manipulating the supply. After this project I think I am going to take a break until the world comes to it's senses. Brian

Wow ....... was that at Nortwest Lumber? I ordered flatsawn red oak and quartersawn red oak from Frank Miller a couple months ago and it was reasonable. Maybe walnut is in short supply, guess I'll stick with oak for awhile.

Yes NW Lumber. I have some walnut I bought before prices went crazy trying to use it up. I use Frank Miller when I need a larger quantity of quarter sawn white oak for a project. Brian

Honestly, I've never seen walnut that high. Even with elevated prices right now here locally, that's about five bucks a board foot over what it's going for here.

This has been a lousy winter for logging at least around here. Lots of rain, not much snow or frozen ground. The good loggers won't skid logs during mud season, and it's been more mud season than winter this year.

This is the obligatory post from the guy in California who wishes he could buy walnut for $13/board ft. It was around $17 the last time I checked my local place.

The Illinois price is higher than here, but not much. The attached price is from a huge hardwood supplier near me.

My local place doesn't post prices online but Hearn Hardwood in Pennsylvania has their walnut from 4/4 to 16/4 from $4.00 to $25.00 per bf depending on the grade. $13.50 seems very high.

Cheaper than Tucson, at least at the expensive place in Tucson. By over $4/bd ft for 4/4.I remain envious of the midwest and costal prices.

My local sawmill has 4/4 walnut @ $8 with wide walnut (8"+) going for $9. Most hardwoods have come down in price recently except for Walnut.

Johnson’s workbench in South Bend, IN is at 10.11/bf for 4/4 walnut 7’ to 8’ length, select & better. Their 100 bf price is $7.76 for the same (species can be mixed for volume break). Hickory & Oak Sawmill (small family mill) in Decatur, MI is at $8.25 for 4/4, but “shorts” 2’-4’ long random width are a $5.00/bf. (he only charges $3.50/bf for other shorts, and often there’s real nice off cuts in the shorts if the length works.

Green Valley Wood Products in Brazil, IN is another excellent independent, and Dave has some good shipping contracts—and a good eye if you tell him what you need. Obligatory disclaimer—I have no personal gain in any of the shops mentioned but have had good dealings with all.

Far drive from Indy for one board—which is a great excuse to stock up!! (that excuse has never worked for me, but it usually gets a smile and/or nod). Good luck.

Our in-town supplier is probably running that, but they're in the middle of the city, in one of the nicest neighborhoods.

Out in the sticks in Xenia Ohio about half that:

I also like Wilhelm Lumber in Indiana. Not sure if either is a more reasonable drive for you.

There must be high demand, or short supply. Our church has some wooded area, and last year we sold some standing walnut to a timber company. For no more than a couple dozen trees, we got quite a price—I was shocked. The only downside is that we have to deal with the tops at some point.
