The Boss wants a shelf added to the end table beside her chair, so..

Based loosely on the Sofa Server from Paul Sellers' Masterclass videos (FREE!) I will be switching out the shelf he used as a stretcher, with a pair of 1 x 3s ....five inches or so from the feet. "Legs" will be through dovetailed to the shelf....

Have 3 planks of 1x6 Ash lumber down in the shop, for now.....Saturday, intend to cut things rough for length....and do a bit of stock prep.....Goal being to have 3 panels glued up....shelf and both legs...

Stay tuned...(Laundry Detail, today)

Bench has been cleaned up...ready for the next Project...
495218
Trying to sort through these 3...
495221
Have some areas that I can use...
495222
And some I can't...
495223
This just might go to the burn barrel...
495224
Will see once the cross cutting starts....need three @ 1x 6 x 26...and six @ 1 x 6 x12"....for the three panels....
Stay tuned..

Cut lines were drawn..
495326
Disston 7 pointer at the ready..
495327
3 blanks to make the main top..
495328
6 blanks to make the 2 ends..
495329
Need to joint a few edges, and trim for width..goal is 16"..
495330

Got bored last night..so..
495331
Made a mess of the shop's floor, I did..
495332
These 2 got put to work...face plane and jointing...I also ripped 3/4" off the not so good edge of the 2 wider boards..
495333
Trying to get a decent looking panel....as for the 16" width Goal..
15-15/16" is the width....

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-12-2023, 2:58 PM
Final width?
495335
Was try to find the best grain match..
495336
For when I glue the panel up this morning...
495337
and ..
495338
495339
2 pipe clamps under, at the ends..and one centered...

Let this sit a day...

steven c newman

Well, that panel was set aside for a while...needed the tablesaw
495425
So, this is how the other face looks....

Needed the tablesaw because.....working of 6 blanks to glue up into the panel for the legs....cross cut...rip a bad edge off...cross cut for square...cross cut couple more blanks as two wound up too narrow (eh, compost happens) and FINALLY have enough for 2 panels at 16" wide.....had the joint a few edges...face plane a few blanks( was a bit TOO rough, and cupped) until finally,....
495426
We had the first panel glued up, and out of the way....worked on the 2nd one a bit, until..
495427
Clamps & Cauls...Bench vise does make a good 3rd hand during glue ups,BTW...
495428
Trying to pull this into flat....will let this sit right there for a day.....

later, I'll clean up the 2 leg panels first...need to lay out dovetail pins...and cut that big curve to make the feet.

I also need to mill 2 stretchers that will be through mortised into the legs...might even do a housed version of that...

We'll see how this week goes along...stay tuned..

Part one of Leg Work, today..

Both panels were removed from the clamps...beltsanded to clean up the glue lines...Panels were then squared up. Then made a small jig, to draw a 6" radius ...and then bandsawed the lines..1st one didn't turn out too bad..
495474
2nd one? Was having "issues" and decided to split...
495475
So, back into the clamps it goes....can always work on the 1st one for a while. Will try to layout for pins after #2 leaves the vise...

Pipe clamps also came off today..
495476
But not the cauls, just yet....need to clean up the glue lines, square the ends, and set a marking gauge for the thickness of the panel, once it is flat...may just keep the panel over on the tablesaw, for now...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman

Sometimes, we tend to over-think a task....but, not today...Panel was too wide and too tall to be in the end vise, so...
495489
Leg vise and a clamp will do just fine....simple selection of tools?
495490
About all I need to layout dovetails...along with a saw...
495491
Just a Disston No.4 Backsaw....
495492
Be sure to mark the waste....and try to stay in the waste side of the lines..
495493

Just got done sharpening up a few chisels....have to decide where to do the chopping....

Don't forget something to sit on, while you work..
495494
As for that Radius Jig?
495495
Nothing fancy...

Try again tomorrow...stay tuned..

1 hour in the shop, today....today being PayDay, meant errands to run, bills to pay....and getting a bit too tired....was glad I could just sit down...
495560
To do some chopping...Needed a back stop...because of the way the leg#1 HAD to sit on the bench,,,and be clamped in place..
495561
Flat board wasn't quite wide enough, added in the extra...up tight against the bandsaw...Got out a selection of chisels, and a hammer..
495562
And then ran the marking gauge a few more times...
495563
So the chisel has a place to start in...
495564
Took a while..no rush...start with the show face, chop down 1/2 way..then flip the board over, and complete the chopping...LOTS of chips..
495565
One bad spot....a flake let loose, and had to be glued back in place...
495568
So, once the glue has cured...I can stand this board back up in the leg vise, and pare a bit...Then transfer a few marks....some to the Top shelf panel, and some to Leg #2 to lay out it's pins.

Doctor visit tomorrow, have a pair of staples to get taken out...and get checked out...Shop time may wait a awhile....we'll see...
Stay tuned...

Transferring layout marks...from one pin board to the next Pin Board..
495672
Merely needs a SHARP #2 Pencil....then flip things around...
495673
Ready to finish the new layouts, and get the backsaw ready to go
495674
Meanwhile, I can clean up the top shelf..and start to lay out the tails...using a completed pin board...as soon as I decide which face of the top panel will be the "show" face..

Trying out a new camera...got tired of that LITTLE Polaroid thing...

steven c newman
02-17-2023, 9:12 PM
Camera and the computer are having issues...Camera loads a file onto the computer...computer then deletes that file, when the next file shows up...work in progress..
so....
495693
Saw work on second leg blank has been done..
495694
Was able to add a 3 clamp in the center...
495695Leg blank #1 has issues, another repair going on....

Top shelf panels is about flat and smooth..
495696
Trying to keep it that way..
495697
Put the cauls back on, for now...
495698
Set far enough in, to allow me to lay out the tails.

We'll see how thing go...tomorrow..

steven c newman
02-18-2023, 4:50 PM
Somedays...it would have been better to stay in bed...
495746
Note second from the top tail...Somebody wasn't paying attention...

Split #1..
495747
Occurred while I was just starting to chop out the waste for the pins....

Split #2...
495748
While I was trying to fit the pins with the tails...

Not sure which was flying the most..chips..or...cussing enough to make a Marine Drill Instructor BLUSH....

Try again tomorrow? We'll see....

Removed 99% of the waste between the pins, this morning...with a (wait for it..) Coping saw....then pared the rest with a chisel or 2...

Pins on leg #1 have been fitted to the tails....then that leg and that end of the shelf were banged together with well spread out glue....checked and adjust for square..

Taking a Lunch Break at the moment..before I haul a camera to the shop.....Film @2300 hrs..I hope..

steven c newman
02-19-2023, 3:10 PM
Camera has returned from the shop...so...
Waste removal tools..
495809
And, what they were working on..
495810
The reason for the 18" clamp..was because the panel tried to split, again...
495811
Leg#1 has been fitted, glued, and squared up....

Another plank has been brought to the shop...and this is about all the good wood was in it..
495812
2 stretchers...plus just over a foot of 1 x 6 left over...stretchers are 26" long....plank was 1 x 6 x 5', BTW..

steven c newman
02-19-2023, 7:13 PM
Camera has issues whenever I take more than 4 pictures...so..
495833
Traced around these pins...
495836
So..next time IN the shop...I get to saw these...and remove the waste...
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
02-20-2023, 8:27 PM
Update time...Trying to figure out HOW to saw the tails...
495894
Well..I clamped the panel down to the bench..and ran this.....then reset the panel back onto the bench a bit..and chopped out the waste...got down to the last whack on a chisel..and broke a chip out of the edge..grabbed another the same width...and cleaned things up......then fitted the leg's pins to the tails....a pare here, a slice there....

Spread the glue around with a brush...and start to assemble things...leg panel starts to do the splits..again...we have ways

495897
Closed up both splits with glue and clamps...and finished clamping things in place...had to add a caul for the pipe clamps..
495898

That is what I get, for working in the shop on a Monday..
495899
Needed a few tools to help tighten the clamps....as for that chipout?
495900
That's going to take a bit of work to fix...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
02-21-2023, 3:34 PM
Clamp was returned to Harbor Freight, this afternoon....
495968
Lifetime Warrantee , bring it in give to the cashier..walk to the rack, select a new version of the same clamp...sign the new receipt....no charge..
BTW: rest of the clamps were removed this morning...
495969
laid over on it's side....
495970
Have 2 of these to install..one per side...

Bought a new 5-pak of 80 grit 3 x 21" sanding belts while I was at Harbor Freight ...
495971
Find it easier to trim things, that way...finish up with a plane...later..
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
02-21-2023, 9:24 PM
Joints filled and cleaned up..
496004
Then the layouts can start..
496009
Used the same setting as the rest of the dovetails in this Project..
496005
Run a few lines around..and angle them a bit..
496006
Tails are laid out..bandsaw to cut this...Then a Disston No. 68 to cut the socket, and a wide chisel to remove the waste...more tools..
496007
Dry fit...
496008
Hammer tight...one done, 3 to go....

Uncle Sir Charles has decided to attack the area right behind my toes...quitting time! Tonic & Gin to relieve the crampy toes...
Stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-22-2023, 10:14 AM
Turned the stand around, to work on the other end of that stretcher...needed things clamped down, first..
496017
Then a combo square to carry the lines around...
496018
both sides..
496019
Then the Dovetail saw to make 3 cuts...
496020
Have to be careful of these "Broom handled" Disston No.68....I have to set a finger beside the blade, to keep it plumb...so it will follow the lines..third line in right in the middle..a relief cut..as the next tool will be a chisel...
496021
1" wide...to remove most of the waste....then that 4-in-hand to finish things off.....dry fit looked good. so..
496022
We have a glue up in progress....

Maybe later, I can flip this over, and work on the other stretcher?

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-22-2023, 5:33 PM
So...this afternoon, ran this around..
496054
All the edges seen here..
496055
Clamp came later...I also rounded the ends..
496056
And ran my ROS with 120 grit, over all the surfaces I could reach, from here...the clamp?
496057
Was to help glue a split ( again!) back together....
496058
So, now I have 2 glue-ups to wait on...before I can get the other stretcher installed...

Figure at some later date..I can always add a shelf on top of the stretchers...
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
02-23-2023, 12:41 PM
Clamps came off, again..
496109
7 clamps to hold the Backstop in place, while the glue dried overnight...
496111
Dovetails #3 and #4 were laid out, sawn, chopped and fitted...#4 was being stubborn...
496112
This square to set the height above the floor...and this one..
496113
To set the angles....Stanley SW 6" Bevel gauge...
#3 wasn't too hateful to do..
496114
#4? Well...
496115
It had "issues"....that after the glue dries...will see a hand plane and sander, and then the router(the corded one)
496116
Was a "Chippy sort of morning"....still fighting this camera's Memory Card issues....

steven c newman
02-24-2023, 3:44 PM
Cleaned up and rounded over..
496182
Sanded smooth as needed, and planed as needed..
496183
Cleaned the arches up...and rounded them a bit..
496184

About ready for a coat of Witch's Brew?
496185
Added1/4 of a pint of leftover Gunstock Stain to the Amber Shellac/Stain blend...PIP?
496186
Little trim stick is along the back edge of the top..to prevent stuff from being pushed through, and onto the floor..
496187
And a look along the back...front view is the same, except for the trim...
496188
Waiting on this to dry,,,then a coat of Satin Poly....maybe this evening?

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
02-25-2023, 11:13 AM
Moving day, today! Last night, a coat of Satin Poly was brushed on, and "tipped off", this morning it got a good rub down , and hauled upstairs...
Had to move an UGLY thing out of the way, first..
496201
Then sweep the site ( made 11 cents, too) and have things inspected..
496202
THEN start the moving in process, under the direction of the Boss...
496203
Whom was sitting in HER recliner, on the other side of this table,BTW
496204
Project completed! Boss is Happy...and has already loaded up that shelf with HER stuff..

Thanks for looking in!
