I bought this board last spring from a local sawmill for $4.00 a bd/ft. It's 128" long, and between 11 1/2" and 12" wide! It planed out at just over 3/4" thick, and it is BEAUTIFUL!!! I'm am so excited I can hardly think straight! I planed it out on my Delta planer at 1/64"/pass with new knives so that I wouldn't get any tearout, and there isn't any at all :D !! It took me over an hour to plane it down, but it was worth it! What a beautiful piece of lumber, the pictures don't really do it justice as my camera doesn't do a real good job on closeups. That's my 16 year old son in the picture eyein' it up:rolleyes: ! Sorry to be so lengthy, but this is a real thrill for me! Figured maple is my absolute favorite, and this is the motherload!! Thanks for looking!!:D :D

Not sure yet Brian. It was originally going to be for my son's graduation present-a bookcase, but I don't have enough wood for it (I could have bought 6 of these all cut in sequence from the same tree-I only bought 2:( ). I'm thinking something special, like a coffee table and matching endtables...maybe a small display case...any thoughts?

I envision something like the coffee table you mentioned. Wood as pretty as that, with a nice finish that makes the grain pop, would be a good choice. I like being able to walk around it and watch the "texture" change as the light reflects at different angles.

Fantastic looking wood, Tom. :)

I would really think about the use of that. Personally, I'd want to use it to best showcase that figure and for maximum visibility to friends and family.

I agree with Michael, work on your veneering skills. You could really make some beautiful furniture with that board.

Tom,
Wasn't that 4 dollars a board foot and your first born:) Down here in SE Pa you pay 7:50 if you were lucky enough to find something that nice.

Michael, that's assuming I have some skills to practice:p ! I've never done any type of veneer work, except for putting stickers on my boys toys over the years if that counts for anything:D !

 You've got more will power than I do ...not buying all 6 boards, that is. I would have bought it all! ...even if it put me in the 'dog house' for weeks!!

Nice wood gloat.

Wow....I'd use that wood at it's current thickness on a project, that's for sure. A coffee table is a great idea. I'd glue that up for a big table top then cut it into a freeform shape like a real tree section tabletop.

Very nice score BTW!!!

Man I am thinking maximizing that board by veneering it. It is a beauty.

Hello Tom; that's an outstanding piece of Maple. Please show us how your completed project turns out. Hey, it's good to see a fellow Rochestarin at the Creek.

I would have bought all six boards and re-made my kitchen table and a few other things. No question about it! I like my kitchen table but have always wanted to redo it in figured maple. That is one beautiful board and needs to go on something that will get noticed like a coffee table. It needs to go where people will see it and where a lamp will not be sitting on top of it.

Man, that's a good one. And at a great price. Curly like that runs between $7 and $10/bd ft around here. I too would have taken the whole pile.
