Hi guys
I ordered a Jet 577102 JBG-8A 8" bench grinder the other day and have not received it. In preparation I was making a dust collection box and needed the height measurement from the tabletop to the top of the 8" grinding wheel. If you have one of these grinders could you reply with this measurement for me? The specs for this grinder say the overall height is 12-1/2" but I don't know exactly what they are including in that measurement. I just need to the top of the wheel. I expect to remove the shield and use my own box for containment.

There was some discussion of this a while back with some examples of dust collector fires and hazards. Avoid sparks, beware of a burning cigarette butt, etc. Has been my training.

There are several old threads and real stores still active and in the SMC archive.

I have seen enclosures around bench grinders to keep dust from getting everywhere. Otherwise I would avoid collecting from a bench grinder.

Funny I just used my bench grinder today and after I was done, just vacuumed up the dust on my workbench. :) I guess if I used it all the time i'd build a box like the one George posted.

Agree with everyone's concerns, but the measurement you asked for (as best I can guess without taking the wheel housing off) is 10-1/4". Bench to top of the wheel housing is 10-7/8". Note the eye shields and tool rests mount to the wheel housing.

Add a couple of rare earth magnets to the entrance of the vac port/hood.
