Trying to plow an eighth inch slot for a box's bottom yesterday had me seriously thinking of trying slips as Derek so often mentions.

The 1/8" blade for the #45 doesn't have a hole or slot to engage the depth adjuster. Since the blade is shorter the solution is easy:

491653

The blade is shorter than the others so it can be adjusted into position by pushing on the end of the blade.

For some reason my slot came out angled and not cutting well. After trying a few times it occurred to me this happens with a rabbet/rebate plane when the blade doesn't reach the edge. A quick look indicated this might be the problem. Holding the blade to a straight edge confirmed it. I will never know how the blade acquired a slight curvature. Trying to correct it didn't work since the blade is too hard to bend. (it broke)

Fortunately there are a few extra sets of blades in the shop. A blade was used from one of them.

Surprising how straight it cut a slot after changing the blade.

It also doesn't help that you can't use the sliding stock with any blade narrower than 1/4" width....
