This Yankee No. 130A spiral “push” screw driver was marketed by Stanley after it acquired North Bros. Manufacturing (the original Yankee manufacturer) in the 1940's. The Yankees came in 3 sizes. The 130A was the medium size, about 16" when fully extended (without a bit) and about 11" when not extended, and the chuck takes a bit shank size of 9/32" diameter. This is the deluxe model that has an internal spring in the tube that pushes the bit outward. This feature was intended to help keep the bit locked in the screw and allows for possible one-handed use. One push of the handle causes the bit to rotate 2 ˝ times. A page from a 1949 Stanley tools catalog describing this model Yankee driver is included in the photos. Also included is a photo of a Yankee 31A box with instructions (these instructions also apply to the 130A).

This particular Yankee was mechanically sound when obtained, but the handle needed refinishing. After sanding, several coats of shellac were applied to the handle followed by a coat of Minwax tung oil for durability. This tool has been cleaned and lubricated and works well.

Note: A hex adapter bit can be purchased for the Yankee from Lee Valley Tools that allows this tool to be used with any standard hex driver bits (be sure to look for the 9/32" adapter size).

FYI, this is one of the nicer Yankee drivers that I've run across and it is still available.
