After a LONG time of nothing in the shop,,,wasn't feeling all that great. Decided to try ONE HOUR in my shop..and see how things go....before the cramps and spasms start up, again...had 4 blanks to surface ....and 4 square...before any joinery could be attempted...
2 sides..
490791
That needed their edges jointed..
490792
Run those edges against the rip fence, to get the other edges parallel...maybe a swipe or 2 to smooth things out..
490793
Which left the 2 for the ends...
490794
A check for height..
490795
and for width..
490796
Trying to get that knot to line up with a finger....

Blanks are all squared up and flat....lay out a few tools..
490797
Just your basic set....chisel as a lay out tool?
490798

Had to set the finger spacings, to match the chisel that will do the chopping

Stay tuned....

Mark out the waste..
490826
"X" marks the spot. On these..it does not matter where you cut...waste side, split or leave the lines...as the mating set will have to match whatever there is left...I switched from 2 sides down to one side..easier to chop just one side at a time..
490827
Lay outs complete...Time to saw and chop..
490828
Cramps in my hands vetoed using this saw....used the bandsaw instead...then set up a chopping block..
490829
With a fresh edge. Saves the top of my bench from chisel cuts...Chop half way down..
490830
Then flip over, and complete the chops..
490831
All done while sitting down..
490832
With the shop fan blowing on me...
490833
Toes started to cramp up...spent one hour IN the shop....try again tomorrow...

Day 2: Again, just one hour was scheduled for the shop...goal was to get at least the first corner completed...
490855
While working around that knot....dry fit..
490856
Still had 40+ minutes....try for 2 corners?
490857
Was trying to get the chisels sharp....trying NOT to get tripped up by the shop stool ( kept trying to wrap a leg around mine ) Chunk of waste came flying straight at my face...hit just below the glasses. Timer went off, hour and 10 minutes....headed upstairs....try again, tomorrow, eh?

Start time today 4pm....quitting time today, 5pm. Working on the next corner...
490900
Some of the tools used. Had to make the cuts with a bandsaw...hands still cramping up too much to hold a saw..
490901
1/4" Witherby chisel, that NEEDED to be sharpened, before I could get some chopping done...then a dry fit..
490902
Once the shop timer went off..time to hang things up...
490903
Will try to get the 4th and last corner done, tomorrow...Shop apron is a bit well-worn...
490904
Ya think?

Stay tuned...

Glad to see you back in the shop! My wife and I are fighting off some head/chest cold thing and mostly losing.

Man that cold must be going around. We had nearly 3 weeks, and spent about 16 days in bed. Was going to get tested, but having had Covid twice now, it simply didn't feel like Covid. Anyway, the last times I had Covid, they shooed me of the doctor's office, telling me there is nothing they can do, other than rest, fluids, and over the counter medicine for the head/chest thing and Tylenol for the headaches. So I a self-dianosed and am finally out of the woods. It was one of the nastiest colds I've had in years.

All 4 corners are now done...
491121
Just needs to be glued up
491122
Then I can glue a bottom panel on...
491123
And then figure out a lid, of some sort....

Stay tuned...

Laid out..
491167
Details..
491168
Glue bottle, glue brush, and a helpful mallet...
491169
And a few clamps..
491170
And a couple spacers to keep things from bowing in...
491171
Let this sit a day..
491172
Then worry about adding a lid, and a bottom.......and a few pieces inside to hold the No. 78 in place...

12-07-2022, 6:22 PM
Out of the clamps...and cleaned up..
491258
Bottom panel is test fitted...
491259
And then glued in place...
491260
And...a blank for a lid has been glued up..
491261
Letting both sit a day, or 2....
Stay tuned...

Wondering IF I can add bread board ends to that lid....maybe?

steven c newman
12-09-2022, 10:31 AM
Checking for fit..
491311
So far, so good..
491312
Might even be enough room for a block plane, too?
Lid panel is out of the clamps..trimmed for size..and back into a few clamps
491313
As there is a bread board edge being attached...
491314
Letting this sit a day...
491315
While I dig around for some hinges, and a latch....

Stay tuned...

12-11-2022, 9:12 PM
Trimming things out....lid needed to match the box..
491527
Front and back were planed even to the sides of the box...made it easier to install the hinges...
491529
And a latch.....ends were also planed down flush ..
491530
Corners were sanded a bit, to get a rounded over look....handles were installed on each end...
491531
Then the entire outside was given a coat of "Gunstock" stain....brushed on, wiped down..
491532
Letting things dry overnight....might see about a coat of Clear Gloss Poly tomorrow?
Stay tuned...

Was informed that I had that latch upside down....fixed that..
491612
As for the plane inside the box..
491613
Box now has a coat of Clear Gloss Poly...waiting on that to dry...
491614
Waiting around...might try to fabricate a Montgomery Ward's Master Quality label...

Stay tuned..
